What makes a clematis garden-worthy (and other plants, too, such as tall bearded iris and daylilies, but that way madness lies…) beyond having beautiful flowers? More than ever, Linda has been looking at the whole plant. Does the plant pout after flowering? Is it possible through pinching and pruning to make a given clematis bushier, or does it always want to be leggy? How often can one get it to rebloom, or if once blooming, how long is the blooming period? Does the plant look bad (aging, worn out foliage, bare legs, or mildew) while in full bloom? Linda will answer these questions, and more. Linda Beutler is the curator of the Rodgerson Clematis Garden in Oregon. She is president of the International Clematis Society and has written numerous fiction and non-fiction books, the most recent of which is The Plant Lover’s Guide to Clematis. $10.50 BBGS members/$15 nonmembers.

Learn more about the birds at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Join Eastside Audubon for a monthly walk that explores the birds and their habitat in the Garden. This one-mile walk will be on trails with various surfaces and may include gravel, mulch, or pavement. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking in the lot is free. From the parking lot enter the garden through the breezeway and turn left. Meet your guide in the covered Gathering Place. This walk is for any level of birder and no experience is necessary. Bring binoculars if you have them. There will be some available to loan for the walk. Each walk is $5 per person. Registration is required. Sorry, the May walk is full. Do you know children excited about nature? Bring them to our Poetry in the Garden Workshop! We’ll explore some poems inspired by the natural world, walk in the garden to gather words and ideas, and then write our own individual poems. Pencils and paper provided. Bring your imagination and wear sturdy shoes for the walk. Recommended for 3rd-5th graders. Youth need to be accompanied by an adult unless they have a waiver.  Waivers are available for 11 years old and up.  Only youth need to register adults do not. One adult may chaperone a group of up to 4 youth. This workshop fulfills Step 1 for the Girl Scout Junior Scribe badge. $17.50 BBGS Member or Scout, additional child $13. $25 nonmember, additional child $18.75. Adult chaperones are free.
