Art Exhibit: Zoe Osenbach / Botanicals and Blooms

Visual Arts Committee Presents:Featured Artist: Zoe OsenbachCommunity Show: Botanicals and BloomsInstallation Day: Wednesday, June 25th from 10:15am-12pmArt Opening: Friday, June 27th from 5:30-7pmOn Display: June 27th – July 22ndPickup: Wednesday, July 23rd from 10:15am-12pm Explore our natural world with this community show featuring botanicals and blooms! Artists are encouraged to submit pieces that reflect personal interpretations of nature’s flora—whether realistic, abstract, or conceptual. We anticipate this being a large show, so one to two items per artist please! (For example, one larger piece, or two smaller) Community shows are open to ALL island artists, beginning and experienced alike. The purpose is to showcase island art and celebrate our creative neighbors! To exhibit in a community show, an artist needs to come on the Installation Day (for this show, June 25th) with their artwork ready to be displayed or hung. On Installation Day, the artist will fill out two labels including title, artist name, the medium, and the price, (or denoted NFS). One label will be attached to the artwork, the second will be given to the committee. The artist will also fill out an Artist Agreement and Sales Information Sheet if she or he does not already have one on file. All placement and hanging of the art will be done by the VAC. Artists are urged to attend and contribute hors d’oeuvres for the Artist Reception on Friday, June 27th To learn more about exhibiting your art, commission structures, and upcoming shows, please visit: www.OrcasCenter.org/VAC Featured Artist: Zoe Osenbach Orcas Center’s Visual Arts Committee (VAC) is pleased to present the next Art Opening, Friday, June 27 from 5:30pm – 7pm with featured artist, Zoe Osenbach in the lobby, and a community show, “Botanicals and Blooms” in the Madrona Room. Zoe Osenbach is a process-oriented artist who approaches her art with a sense of play and curiosity. Gravitating toward found, used, and recycled materials, she breathes new life into objects that others have discarded. For Zoe, creative freedom often emerges from the constraints of using only what she can scavenge—whether it’s from the Exchange or a friend’s trash bin. She revels in taking things apart and discovering treasures inside, which adds an element of chance and delight to the process. “Plus,” Zoe says, “Swinging a hammer is just thoroughly enjoyable.” Beyond her artistic practice, Osenbach is a dedicated community organizer, focused on giving fine artists opportunities for showcasing and selling their wares. She facilitates the Orcas Artists Studio Tour, connecting artists and audiences through intimate glimpses into working studios – this year’s roster includes nearly 40 artists and takes place August 8 – 10. Additionally, Zoe curates the annual Handmade Craft Market at Orcas Center each fall, celebrating artisanal talent and handcrafted wares, and is a dedicated volunteer of the Visual Arts Committee at Orcas Center, which coordinates monthly art exhibits. This summer’s exhibition offers a glimpse into Osenbach’s evolving body of work, inviting viewers to discover the hidden stories and overlooked beauty beneath the plastic surfaces of everyday items, and challenge the pervasiveness of our throwaway culture. Join us for light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist as well as enjoy the community show, “Botanicals and Blooms” in the Madrona room, Friday, June 27 starting at 5:30pm. Over decades, this fragile workhorse pioneered a dazzling private & public alchemy of staggering talent, success, renown, and controversy. Weaving the legendary Frenchman’s written words and recorded observations with a rich archival sampling of his exhaustive output, director Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s JEAN COCTEAU tells his fascinating story by compassionately bringing into view a life freed by artistic impulse — and an art deeply entwined with his ecstasies and struggles. Lisa Immordino Vreeland | Director/Producer Lisa Immordino Vreeland has been immersed in the world of fashion, art, and culture for the past 25 years. Her first book was accompanied by her directorial debut of the documentary of the same name, DIANA VREELAND: THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL (2012). The film had its European premiere at the Venice Film Festival and its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. It went on to win the Silver Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival and the fashion category for the Design of the Year Awards—otherwise known as “The Oscars” of design—at the Design Museum in London. Her second film, PEGGY GUGGENHEIM: ART ADDICT premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (2015) and had its European premiere at Art Basel. Her second book, Love, Cecil came out in October 2017 to accompany the film LOVE, CECIL that premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2017. Immordino Vreeland curated and directed the award-winning short film series called ART OF STYLE, for the digital fashion network, Made to Measure. The films explored the creative expression of innovative designers and captured their strategy of style. She continues to create work for collectors, galleries, and museums. Her fourth film, TRUMAN & TENNESSEE: AN INTIMATE CONVERSATION was accepted at the 2020 Telluride Film Festival, and was named both the Best Documentary Feature at the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival and the Best LGBTQ Film at the Key West Film Festival. It was purchased by Kino Lorber in the US and is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel. John Northrup | Producer/EditorJohn Northrup is a documentary producer and editor, serving as associate producer on DIANA VREELAND: THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL (2012), and editing and co-producing WILSON IN SITU (2012), which tells the story of theatre legend Robert Wilson and his Watermill Center. He co-produced the feature documentaries PEGGY GUGGENHEIM: ART ADDICT (Tribeca Film Festival, 2015) as well as LOVE, CECIL (Telluride Film Festival, 2017), on famed twentieth-century British photographer/designer Cecil Beaton. He produced and edited twelve episodes of the award-winning short documentary series ART OF STYLE with director Lisa Immordino Vreeland for M2M. Finally, in addition to editing KUSAMA – INFINITY (Sundance Film Festival, 2018) on Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, and FIRE MUSIC (New York Film Festival, 2021) on the free jazz movement, he produced TRUMAN & TENNESSEE: AN INTIMATE CONVERSATION (2020), a feature documentary on the relationship between Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams. He is currently editing UNKNOWN BEAUTY: FRANÇOIS NARS.

Unless touring with Y La Bamba, in which she sings backup vocals, her feet and roots are always close to the shores of the Pacific Ocean (yearning for and pulled by her packs). Experience, observations and negotiations with race, culture, gender and class are inextricably woven into her purpose and product. Songs of love. Songs of community and fight, of life and self. She lives in attractive vulnerability and sincere humility despite the power of her performances and songs. An early retirement as a full time secondary school teacher in 2019 has allowed her to tour, play local shows, and record more, releasing her EP, Better Metric, in 2020, then her first LP, Body, in 2022, with engineer, bandmate and friend Ryan Oxford at The Center for Sound, Light and Color. Since those releases she’s unsurprisingly caught the attention of and has been featured in and on several publications, podcasts and programs such as OPB, Live Wire Radio, Vortex Music Magazine, Willamette Week, KEXP. He is widely known for his work with the alternative rock band, Señor Loop, with whom he has released 6 albums and played some of the most important festivals in Latin America, as well as US festivals like SXSW. His recent collaborations include singing with salsa legend Ruben Blades and drumming for Lido Pimienta, Chicano Batman, Y La Bamba and a song with Carlos Méndez. Lilo’s solo work blends rock, jazz, reggae, blues, and R&B with a mysterious Latin flavor. The deeply introspective singles “Wolverine Blues” and “Candanga” emerged from his 2014 battle with cancer and journey through chemotherapy. “El Tesoro” a psychedelic tinged track written by Lilo’s brother, Caito, evokes memories of summers spent in the Panamanian countryside. Lilo and his family moved to Orcas Island in 2020, seeking — and finding — refuge from the chaos of the pandemic. A short visit turned into a 4 year residency, with the island providing a sanctuary for his songwriting and recording. In that period, he has released “Cabin Fever” an instrumental dub track, and “Reporte del Tiempo” which mixes elements of Panamanian folklore and classic US country. Also, this past March he started releasing the first set of singles for his sophomore solo album with the tracks Sal Bendita and Casa de Herrero. With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice, Sumner’s lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle) and Mike Siegel (upright bass). Sumner is no stranger to the stage. She spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit, singing and writing with the genre-bending roots group Twisted Pine.
