This important day serves as an opportunity for our schools and community to honor the Indigenous survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the lasting impacts of these institutions on Indigenous peoples, families, and communities.Orange Shirt Day is rooted in the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at school. Her experience has become a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children across generations.ESD Board accepted a resolution at the last general meeting to designate September 30th as Orange Shirt / Every Child Matters Day to acknowledge the harm sending indigenous youth to residential schools and promote the implementation of the Since Time Immemorial curriculum.
