Funny and Fragile Animalia Fiber works by Holly Cole: October 9th - November 8th Opening Reception: Thursday, October 9th Holly Cole’s background in theater and costume design infuses her artwork with drama, character, and deep storytelling. After decades designing for Broadway, the Muppets, Ringling Bros., and regional theaters—as well as teaching in university costume programs—she turned her creative energy toward fiber art, sculpting creatures full of emotion, charm, and layered meaning. Cole’s work draws from a lifetime of making: draping, sewing, sculpting, dyeing, printing—skills developed backstage that now support her front-and-center focus on animals. Her creatures are sometimes playful, sometimes solemn, but always built to invite empathy and connection. The exhibition includes selections from three recent series: Dog Gestalt celebrates the spirit and emotional range of dogs through quilted portraits; Vanishing Creatures explores endangered species and the threats they face; and Veterans, sculpted from a battered military tarp, honors animal resilience and survival. “Sometimes my work is a celebration of foolish and endearing creatures; sometimes it is a study in the strength and endurance these creatures need.   Expressions In Light $40.00 In this workshop, Belinda will demonstrate how beginning with a dark underpainting creates a strong foundation for paintings that glow with brilliant light. As the painting progresses, she will guide students to explore the use of different pastel types, varied pressure, and the power of pure pigment instead of relying on "white lights" to capture luminosity.  Belinda B. Armstrong  is a retired art educator with 25 years of teaching experience now focused on her studio practice full time. She has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in a number of juried shows locally and internationally. In the summer of 2024, Belinda completed First Stop Terrapin Park, circa 1913, a mural for the Parkersburg Floodwall Mural Project. Join us as we take a dive into the music of Chopin, Liszt, Butterworth, and Ravel and explore the circumstances around these military compositions. Popular tunes will also be performed that speak of loved ones yearning to be reunited. We hope you join us for this tribute to composers and music during times of war. Performers: Merewyn Weinkauf is an Assistant Professor of Music at Marietta College where she teaches private piano students and music history. Her twenty-two year career at Marietta College includes performing for young artists, guest artists, and faculty recitals. Mrs. Weinkauf earned a BM in Piano Performance from East Texas Baptist University and an MM in Collaborative Piano from Baylor University. Brenden Smith is a native of Parkersburg and earned his BM from Marietta College in Vocal Performance and an MA in Music Education from Liberty University. Brenden is an active performer with the Parkersburg Choral Society and is working his teaching certificate. This concert is a free offering, but reservations are required. Space is limited (30 seats). Donations are appreciated.

That album culminated years of slow building and provided the Raleigh, N.C. native the breakthrough he deserved. After an 18 month rigorous run, he wasn’t ready to take a deserved break. Upon Electric Cowboy’s release, Rashad’s creative ideas continued to flow. He reached out to friends and collaborators, like writer Gentle Nature and J.J. Whitefield of German funk group The Poets of Rhythm and began to mold his new ideas into full-fledged songs. After the campaign for Electric Cowboy wound down, Rashad returned to his home state of North Carolina and got to work on his fifth studio album. As the song ideas flowed, Rashad explored the importance of self-reflection and personal experiences, in particular themes of love and vulnerability. Drawing from that prism and channeling the joy of his recent engagement, the artist had plenty of positive momentum heading into the recording sessions.   Lera Lynn Lera Lynn is an acclaimed singer-songwriter whose haunting voice, cinematic soundscapes, and genre-defying style have earned her a devoted cult following. Blending Americana, indie rock, folk noir, and art pop noir, she has crafted an unmistakable sonic identity that is both timeless and ever-evolving. Lynn first gained wide recognition for her music featured on HBO’s True Detective (Season 2), where her atmospheric songs and on-screen performance left an indelible mark on viewers. A fiercely independent artist, Lynn has built a career on thoughtful songwriting, poetic lyricism, and meticulous production, all while nurturing a direct relationship with her fans, running her own independent label, Ruby Range Records. Beyond her own albums, she has composed and produced music for video games, podcast theme songs, and films, collaborated with a vast array of artists, and produced records for others. Amy Millan The first solo album from Amy Millan in over 15 years, I Went To Find You emerged from the kind of once-in-a-lifetime serendipity that alters our experience of the world. After crossing paths with award-winning musician/composer Jay McCarrol in fall 2023, the Montreal-based singer/songwriter felt a sense of musical communion reminiscent of the elation she’d first accessed in singing with her father as a little girl—a connection severed when her dad was killed in a car accident just before her fifth birthday. As she began creating songs with McCarrol, Millan slowly realized that an unconscious desire to sustain that feeling had informed her lifelong devotion to music and her many cherished collaborations over the years, including her work as co-lead vocalist of beloved indie-pop band Stars and a satellite member of iconic collective Broken Social Scene.

Funny and Fragile Animalia Fiber works by Holly Cole: October 9th - November 8th Opening Reception: Thursday, October 9th Holly Cole’s background in theater and costume design infuses her artwork with drama, character, and deep storytelling. After decades designing for Broadway, the Muppets, Ringling Bros., and regional theaters—as well as teaching in university costume programs—she turned her creative energy toward fiber art, sculpting creatures full of emotion, charm, and layered meaning. Cole’s work draws from a lifetime of making: draping, sewing, sculpting, dyeing, printing—skills developed backstage that now support her front-and-center focus on animals. Her creatures are sometimes playful, sometimes solemn, but always built to invite empathy and connection. The exhibition includes selections from three recent series: Dog Gestalt celebrates the spirit and emotional range of dogs through quilted portraits; Vanishing Creatures explores endangered species and the threats they face; and Veterans, sculpted from a battered military tarp, honors animal resilience and survival. “Sometimes my work is a celebration of foolish and endearing creatures; sometimes it is a study in the strength and endurance these creatures need.   Intro to Stained Glass Art $160.00 This 5-week class will introduce the tools and techniques of stained glass construction. Students will learn the Tiffany method, also called the copper foil method, to create one or more projects that showcase the beauty of stained glass. Designs can be supplied, or students may wish to consult with the instructor about creating their own. Students who have no experience with stained glass are welcome, as well as students who have some experience but wish to build upon that foundation. All supplies and materials for this class are included with registration. This class is open to those age 14 and older.   Discovering History: "No Savage Should Inherit the Land": War in the Ohio Valley   On Friday, November 7, at noon, Dr. Brandon Downing from Marietta College will discuss the early period in American history, focusing on the time around the Seven Years' War. Pennsylvania illustrates the most effective way for them to achieve more autonomy over its land, security, and diplomacy in a time of great uncertainty. Historians often equate violence on the frontier with racial, ethnic, or cultural conflict between natives and white settlers or as a romantic struggle of independent frontier families against savage Indian warriors who were bent on destruction, murder, and kidnapping. Instead, Delaware performative violence was a way to reorder the world in which they lived by reshaping settlement, initiating negotiations for loyalty, and redefining frontier political relationships. Dr. Brandon Downing is Associate Professor of History at Marietta College. His research focuses on early American history, particularly native-white relations along the frontier. He teaches courses in Colonial America, the American Revolutionary Era, Native American History, and Public History. His current book manuscript is “‘Barbarous Tribes of Savages’: Violence and Conflict on the Periphery of Empire in the Colonial Mid-Atlantic, 1750-1776.” As a member of the Ohio Humanities Speakers Bureau, he gives talks on the Northwest Territory, the War of 1812, and the role Marietta played in the development of the new nation. Are we going to love, or are we going to hate? We have a finite amount of time, each of us on this Earth. So probably want to make the best out of it instead of wasting time.” “Dig A Hole” is the lead track on Be Right Here and sets the tone for another expansive set of rock ‘n’ roll from Blackberry Smoke. As always, the Georgia-based band—Starr, Still, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner and drummer Brit Turner—draw inspiration from Southern rock, blues-leaning classic rock and rootsy vintage country. But on Be Right Here, Blackberry Smoke sound even more self-assured, from the strength of their songwriting to their musical execution. Over the past two decades, Blackberry Smoke has developed this confidence and amassed a loyal fanbase, leading their last five full-length albums to achieve great chart success, including 2021’s You Hear Georgia, which reached #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart. The band wrote and recorded You Hear Georgia during the most intense periods of the pandemic but held off on releasing it until they could go tour again. Starr says Blackberry Smoke took the same deliberate approach with Be Right Here, which was recorded in late 2022 and early 2023, around the same time drummer Brit Turner was diagnosed with a type of brain tumor known as Glioblastoma. “We didn’t feel a whole lot of pressure to go in and make this one quickly,” Starr shares. Working once again with Grammy-Award winning producer Dave Cobb, Blackberry Smoke has crafted music that’s raw and immediate-sounding. They tracked the album live in the same space; an approach Cobb also prefers as it lends itself to a looser vibe. “I remember different times I would say, ‘I think we should redo that,’ and he’s like, ‘No, leave it that way. That way it’s magical,” Starr remembers. “It’s just as natural and real as possible.” Location also factored into Be Right Here’s sound as they recorded most of the album at Nashville’s beloved RCA Studio A, and then polished it off in Cobb’s studio in Savannah, Georgia. “It’s down in the low country and beautiful,” Starr says of the space, called Georgia Mae. “This album has a swagger to it, a deep in the pocket kind of feel. Those surroundings helped give the record that feel.” Be Right Here’s lyrics are particularly literary, full of vivid and relatable characters that ensure the songs often resemble rich short stories. For example, “Whatcha Know Good,” a co-write with Brent Cobb, is a “feel-good song” driven by an amiable narrator who gets along with everybody and dislikes negativity. “There’s plenty of bad news when you turn on the television,” Starr says. “The dude in this song, he doesn’t want to hear it anymore. He wants to go to fishing and talk about good news. We were giggling the whole time because we know that guy. Maybe we are that guy.” A laid-back, Stones-like guitar lick from former Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson inspired “Like It Was Yesterday,” helping Starr conjure another very specific character: an earnest young guy who doesn’t have much life experience, but knows what he likes and is grateful for good times. “I picture him laying on the hood of his car with his girl, staring up at the moon and the stars,” Starr says. “It’s the idea of holding onto that fleeting moment, because it can slip away from you.” Other Be Right Here highlights include “Azalea” and “Little Bit Crazy,” both co-written with Starr’s frequent songwriting collaborator Travis Meadows. The latter song, which begins with a chorus of soulful gospel singers before blooming into a languid Southern rocker, features a narrator who’s embroiled in a relationship that’s fun, but not necessarily healthy. Meanwhile, the lovely, elegiac folk ballad “Azalea” is centered on someone who seems emotionally bereft and spiritually lost, but is working hard to find their way home. “It’s a heavy song. It’s not a happy song, per se,” Starr says. However, “Azalea” has a distinct streak of optimism near the end, which Starr says is intentional: “There’s some hope in there, too. It comes with both Travis and I being fathers. Hold on to your kids as tight as you can without smothering them.” The delicate balance of familial protection also permeates the easygoing “Other Side of the Light,” a co-write with Levi Lowrey. Written from the perspective of a young boy on an obstacle-filled road trip, the tune stresses that he’ll find shelter and safety with his mom. In contrast, the stomping “Hammer and the Nail,” which Starr wrote with Nelson, takes another approach to family ties—in this case, a son who needs to decide if he’s going to give into his wild side and take after his rebellious father. Fittingly, lively acoustic guitar gives way to an explosive chorus with freewheeling bar-blues piano and raucous electric riffs. Be Right Here ends on a confident note, the organ-driven power ballad, “Barefoot Angel.” Starr says he doesn’t write many love songs, but made an exception here. “It’s either me singing about my wife or some guy singing about his wife that’s in the same situation, which is, I wouldn’t be able to do anything without her. When I’m worried and feeling bad, she makes it better.” For Blackberry Smoke, embracing the light and finding the silver lining are once again at the heart of what they do best. After decades designing for Broadway, the Muppets, Ringling Bros., and regional theaters—as well as teaching in university costume programs—she turned her creative energy toward fiber art, sculpting creatures full of emotion, charm, and layered meaning. Cole’s work draws from a lifetime of making: draping, sewing, sculpting, dyeing, printing—skills developed backstage that now support her front-and-center focus on animals. Her creatures are sometimes playful, sometimes solemn, but always built to invite empathy and connection. In Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Dirk finds himself on the trail of a gruesome murderer who is somehow involved with the works of Coleridge, quantum physics, and the enigmatic study of the Cambridge Professor of Chronology.   Mini Monet from $40.00 Dress for mess and be prepared for mini and me style fun as you experience a variety of art materials and mediums through exploration and play with your little one. Designed for ages 18 months to 3 years with their caregiver (only 1 adult permitted per child). The class will end with story time and free play in the "Big Room". Two session times to pick from for each month. Many more will be on display. These quilts are original designs based on family history, historic events, and places. Patterns are available for sale. Susan Springston Pierce grew up in Vienna, West Virginia and now resides in North Carolina. Self-taught, Susan has been quilting for 35 years. She designs her own quilts based on family history, Civil War events and historic sites. There is a m story behind every quilt she makes and in some cases the ent quilts have hidden meanings in their design. She has presented her program and workshops to quilt guilds in several states. In 2015, Susan began designing for Pineapple Fabrics, sister company to Keepsake Quilting. Local author, teacher, and textile artist, Mary Roediger will be presenting an illustrated talk “Textiles ACTOSS America” on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 2 p.m. during the upcoming Quilt Show sponsored by friends of Blennerhassett Museum. With her own slides, Mary will be sharing interesting textile pieces and quilts she has found in recent travels within the United States. There is museum exhibits that are revealed, inspirations discovered, as well as a nice dose of historical facts throughout. Come join this slide show presentation to be inspired by items museum curators deem important and to see history through the eyes of a passionate textile artist. Mary Roediger is a certified Master Clothing Educator and Advisor with the Ohio 4-H Clothing and Textiles Program. She is the author of the Ohio 4-H Clothing project book, “Em-bel-lish- A Guide to Wearable Art”. She enjoys serving as a county and state 4-H judge and is a member of the Ohio 4-H foundation Board. The program is dedicated to building beds for children who do not have one to sleep in. The Ripley WV Rotary dub is sponsoring this talk and getting the word out, so no child sleeps on the floor! This is a volunteer program to build these beds which are built from scratch, there is no experience needed to help make a child’s dream come true. During the quilt show there will be a donation container for those who want to donate twin size bedding-sheets, pillowcases, blankets and quilts.
