Curious about how biologists catch and study birds, especially owls? Join us for an exciting evening as host Doug Inkley demonstrates banding saw-whet owls—a rare chance to see one of these tiny nocturnal predators up close!PVAS Host: Alex Pellegrini Base rate of $10/person to cover cost of volunteer banding operations. For ages 10 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible Saw-whet owls (Aegolius acadicus), the smallest owls in eastern North America, are known for their distinct ‘toot-toot-toot’ call, which you might hear during the program. After a brief orientation on arrival, you’ll get an inside look at the scientific research and banding operations that help biologists learn more about these fascinating migratory birds. The program fee is $10.00 per person. This helps subsidize the cost of the saw-whet owl banding equipment and supplies, which is paid for out of pocket, as the program is 100% volunteer-operated and supported. The higher levels in the suggested donations help cover PVAS administrative costs. Please note that in case of inclement weather, such as high winds, fog, or rain, we will notify you by email by 3:00 pm on the day of the event. Like all birding, there is no guarantee the birds will cooperate, thereby enabling us to see one! However, we will nonetheless learn about the study. Don’t miss this chance to learn about these wonderful creatures in a fun and educational setting! Walking Distance: Minimal (~200 feet)Pace/Activities: Essentially an outdoor class.Exposure: This event is held outdoors in the evening and is likely to be cold. About Alex: Alex Pellegrini is an avian ecologist based in Maryland. He earned his B.S. from Towson University in 2022, double-majoring in Conservation Biology and Animal Behavior. As the Farmland Raptor Program Coordinator with the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership, Alex leads statewide efforts to expand nesting opportunities for American Kestrels and American Barn Owls, while also studying Short-eared Owls with a focus on taxonomy, behavior, and conservation across Maryland. He also works as an avian research technician at Patuxent River Park, where he monitors Osprey nesting success, studies Sora migration, and operates a MAPS songbird banding station. Beyond these roles, Alex manages datasets for Operation Osprey, serves on the Maryland/D.C. Records Committee of the Maryland Ornithological Society, and is a lead bander at the Project Owlnet station in Frederick. He is also involved in several international collaborations, including the Global Owl Project and the International Short-eared Owl Working Group, supporting research on owl taxonomy and migratory connectivity.

Let’s get outside and enjoy the trails together!PVAS Host: Ellen Murphy This is a free/donation-based program. All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. This program has a minimum of 5 participants. Join us for a monthly Wellness Walk—an easy-going group hike to explore beautiful natural areas and connect with others. Walk distances vary, but are often around 2 miles. This November, join us for a stroll along Martinsburg’s hidden gem: the Frog Hollow Trail. Paved and just about a mile in length, this accessible path winds from the historic Train Station through quiet woodlands and between city buildings to Route 9. Along the way, you’ll see striking murals on Stephen Street honoring local legends Hack Wilson, Vicky Bullett, and Garland Wilson—each a window into the rich cultural history of the area. Once a vital industrial rail line, the Frog Hollow Spur was constructed in the 1880s to serve the Standard Lime and Stone Company. It remained in operation for nearly 140 years before the tracks were removed in 2021. It’s a lovely, tucked-away route—perfect for a relaxing walk steeped in both nature and history. Walking Distance: Approximately 2 miles or less.Pace/Activities: Moderate (steady but able to maintain a conversation)Exposure: Partial shade. Some areas of full sun.Terrain: Paved and mostly flat.Restroom: Parking/Where to Meet: You will meet near the train station in Martinsburg. Her favorite word is “Look” and my favorite place is Yankauer Nature Preserve. She and her husband Kevin have been married for 39 years, residents of WV for almost 30 years, and “parents” to a series of pound puppies (currently #8 and 9).

We’ll begin by getting to know the month’s theme—whether it’s a bird, plant, or seasonal scene—through a short, engaging lesson. Then we’ll guide you step-by-step through creating a watercolor painting inspired by that subject, using reference photos we provide. The process is great for beginners—no experience is necessary! Along the way, we’ll chat about fun facts, artistic details we notice, and whatever else comes up in good company. You’ll head home with a beautiful watercolor creation: maybe a 5×7” greeting card or a piece worthy of your fridge or a frame. Come ready to learn, create, and enjoy the process—together. Join Bill Telfair and Master Naturalist Scot DeGraf for a morning bird walk at Rolling Ridge Conservancy!PVAS Host: Bill Telfair, Scot DeGraf This is a free/donation-based program. For ages 8 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. Explore the habitat and the bird life with others on the gorgeous trails of Rolling Ridge Conservancy, the largest privately-owned wilderness area near Washington DC and along the entire Appalachian Trail. Anyone with an interest in birding is welcome to join trip leaders Bill and Scot as they explore some of the 1500 acres of protected woodlands. These walks are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Click here to see a list of birds seen in past Novembers! (Some places may not have an eBird list for that month, so that is a great opportunity for you to add the birds you see at this bird walk!) Rolling Ridge Conservancy welcomes donations, which can either be accepted on the morning of the walk or through their website (https://www.rollingridgeconservancy.org/donate). She is also a volunteer digital content provider for the National Park Service, and her photos are used by various federal, state, and local agencies to promote wildlife awareness and appreciation. The Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology have recognized Jane’s work, and her photos have been featured in calendars for the Department of State, Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Join Master Naturalist Roy Boyle for a fun night of trivia and learning. This engaging evening program is held over Zoom, so you can join in from the comfort of your favorite chair! Kahoots are best played in a group setting so we are excited to join together with fellow players over Zoom. We will play as a group with Roy Boyle as our team leader and host. Roy will be available to answer any questions you may have at the beginning and along the way. How it works: After registering, you will receive a Zoom link to join the program.Log into Zoom at 7:30.You will be given a code to go to a Kahoot game via Zoom. Go to Kahoot.it and type in the code. Add your “game name” and start the game. PVAS volunteers are the foundation of everything we do—and it’s time to celebrate you! Whether you’ve dug into conservation as a Preserve Project Volunteer, monitored bird populations as a Birding Community Scientist, greeted guests as a Nature Center Docent, cared for turtles as an Animal Ambassador Caretaker, helped with kids’ programs, led public walks and talks, removed invasive plants as a Weed Warrior, showed up for or helped plan special events, maintained trails, or supported us in your own unique way—this event is for all PVAS volunteers. Refreshments will be provided and we welcome you to bring a friend, significant other, or other “plus one!”  We will have games, awards, and door prizes! Each volunteer who attends will also receive a “PVAS Volunteer” iron-on transfer so you can have an official shirt! (If you bring a shirt, we can iron it on for you!). We can’t wait to see you there! Join us for a day of discovery at Case Nature Center!PVAS Host: PVAS Nature Center Docents Free and open to the public. All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required. Visit us at the Case Nature Center! Meet our friendly docents, who are eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about nature and PVAS preserves. Get hands-on with our touch table filled with fascinating nature objects, check out gear like binoculars and field guides, and meet our Animal Ambassadors. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. Join trip leader Bill Telfair for a bird walk at Cool Spring Preserve! Anyone with an interest is welcome to come along, regardless of their birding skills. The trails at Cool Spring Preserve have a lot to offer! From well-maintained footpaths to gorgeous views, the 74 acres of this preserve are home to much wildlife. Click here to see a list of birds seen in past Novembers! (Some places may not have an eBird list for that month, so that is a great opportunity for you to add the birds you see at this bird walk!) Walking Distance: Approximately 1 -2 miles.Pace/Activities: Leisurely (meandering, many breaks to stop and observe)Exposure: Partial shade/winter canopy. Some areas of full sun.Terrain: Hard ground/hiking trail in some areas, mowed grass in other areas. Gentle slopes/rolling hillsRestroom: At the start of the program, Port-a-Pottys will be available. At the end of the program when the Case Nature Center is open, indoor flushing restrooms will be available.Parking/Where to Meet: Participants should meet at the back deck (just down from the parking lot) of the Nature Center.What to Bring: Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring water.
