Nature's Palette Watercolor Workshop: Bald eagle

This month’s subject is the Bald eagle.$15/person (PVAS members receive a 10% discount). For ages 12 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. This program has a minimum of 4 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible Join us each month as we explore a new corner of the natural world through watercolor. We’ll begin by getting to know the month’s theme—whether it’s a bird, plant, or seasonal scene—through a short, engaging lesson. Then we’ll guide you step-by-step through creating a watercolor painting inspired by that subject, using reference photos we provide. The process is great for beginners—no experience is necessary! Along the way, we’ll chat about fun facts, artistic details we notice, and whatever else comes up in good company. You’ll head home with a beautiful watercolor creation: maybe a 5×7” greeting card or a piece worthy of your fridge or a frame. Come ready to learn, create, and enjoy the process—together. Rolling Ridge Conservancy Bird Walk

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Join Bill Telfair and Master Naturalist Scot DeGraf for a morning bird walk at Rolling Ridge Conservancy!PVAS Host: Bill Telfair, Scot DeGraf This is a free/donation-based program. For ages 8 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. Explore the habitat and the bird life with others on the gorgeous trails of Rolling Ridge Conservancy, the largest privately-owned wilderness area near Washington DC and along the entire Appalachian Trail. Anyone with an interest in birding is welcome to join trip leaders Bill and Scot as they explore some of the 1500 acres of protected woodlands. These walks are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Click here to see a list of birds seen in past Februarys! (Some places may not have an eBird list for that month, so that is a great opportunity for you to add the birds you see at this bird walk!) Rolling Ridge Conservancy welcomes donations, which can either be accepted on the morning of the walk or through their website (https://www.rollingridgeconservancy.org/donate). PVAS Monthly Program: Farmland Raptor Program: Conserving Maryland’s Farmland Raptors

Presentation Description – Join us for an overview of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership’s Farmland Raptor Program, an initiative focused on slowing and reversing the decline of raptors that provide vital ecosystem services for farmers. These species rely on Maryland’s grasslands and farmlands to nest successfully and include American Barn Owls, American Kestrels, Northern Harriers, and Short-eared Owls. Alex will cover their life history and current status in the state, share updates from ongoing research and monitoring, and highlight conservation efforts underway across the region. He will also describe ways that landowners, volunteers, and community members can get involved. About the Presenter: Alex Pellegrini is an avian ecologist based in Maryland. He earned his B.S. from Towson University in 2022, double-majoring in Conservation Biology and Animal Behavior. As the Farmland Raptor Program Coordinator with the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership, Alex leads statewide efforts to expand nesting opportunities for American Kestrels and American Barn Owls, while also studying Short-eared Owls with a focus on taxonomy, behavior, and conservation across Maryland. He also works as an avian research technician at Patuxent River Park, where he monitors Osprey nesting success, studies Sora migration, and leads the operation of a MAPS songbird banding station. Beyond these roles, Alex manages datasets for Operation Osprey, serves on the Maryland/D.C. Records Committee of the Maryland Ornithological Society, and is a lead bander at the Project Owlnet station in Frederick. He is also involved in several international collaborations, including the Global Owl Project and the International Short-eared Owl Working Group, supporting research on owl taxonomy and migratory connectivity. Winter Tree Identification Hike

Join Master Naturalist Roy Boyle for a frolic in the forest identifying trees and shrubs at Cool Spring Nature Preserve.PVAS Host: Roy Boyle Free and open to the public. For ages 16 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible After some basic instruction in terminology and identification techniques, participants will walk the trails and practice together the science and art of tree identification. We will be hiking with participants from the training program that will occur just before we start. If you have the book, “”Winter Tree Finder”” by May Theilgaard Watts and Tom Watts, bring it along. A few copies will be available to use during the program. Bring binoculars, a pocket knife, and your PVMN jeweler’s loupe for magnifying the small parts of twigs if you have them. A phone with a camera is also useful. The program will be entirely outdoors. Light rain or snow will not cancel the program. An hour of education credit is available for Master Naturalists. Walking Distance: 1-1.5 milesPace/Activities: Leisurely (meandering, many breaks to stop and observe)Exposure: Partial shade/winter canopy. Some areas of full sun.Terrain: Mowed grass/earthen trail Gentle slopes/rolling hillsRestroom: Indoor, flushing restrooms are available in the Case Nature Center.Parking/Where to Meet: Participants should meet at the back deck (just down from the parking lot) of the Nature Center.What to Bring: Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes or boots are needed to hike the slightly hilly wide trails. About our Host: Roy Boyle is a middle school science teacher with a very real addiction to birding and all things nature. His degrees include a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Science Education. Roy has worked as a state park environmental educator and has been birding for over 40 years. Roy sets up and offers an online Kahoot game on various subjects every other month for Potomac Valley Audubon Society where Master Naturalists play along for education credit. He is also a member of Potomac Valley Master Naturalists and currently serves as Education Chair.

All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. This program has a minimum of 5 participants. This February, we’re celebrating World Wetlands Day with a visit to one of PVAS’s wetland habitats — Stauffer’s Marsh Nature Preserve, a 46-acre sanctuary tucked into Back Creek Valley. Once a stretch of farmland, this landscape was restored through the USDA’s first Wetland Reserve Program project in West Virginia, transforming it into the thriving marshwe know today. With more than 160 bird species recorded here, the preserve has become an essential habitat for ducks, geese, and many other wildlife that depend on wetlands. As we wander the trail, we’ll take in the wide-open views, pause to watch waterfowl moving through the marsh (if they are out and about), and enjoy the calm that settles over the landscape in winter. Feel free to bring binoculars if you’d like to add a bit of birdwatching to the outing. After our walk, we may warm up with hot chocolate. Dress for the season, bring your curiosity, and join us for a peaceful winter walk through this remarkable wetland preserve. Walking Distance: Approximately 2 miles or less.Pace/Activities: Moderate (steady but able to maintain a conversation)Exposure: Lots of open sky. Her favorite word is “Look” and my favorite place is Yankauer Nature Preserve. She and her husband Kevin have been married for 39 years, residents of WV for almost 30 years, and “parents” to a series of pound puppies (currently #8 and 9).
