A Swift Night Out!

Celebrate Chimney Swifts in Shepherdstown during ‘A Swift Night Out’!PVAS Host: KC Walters Free and open to the public. All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required, but appreciated for planning purposes (All registered participants are guaranteed a sweet treat!). PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible A Swift Night Out is a continent-wide effort to raise awareness about and encourage interest in Chimney Swifts and Vaux’s Swifts. How to Participate: Start by meeting us at the newly constructed Chimney Swift Tower off of University Drive near Dunlop Hall on Shepherd University’s campus.Visit all five stations we will have set up at the tower to learn all about Chimney Swifts. After visiting all the stations, you will receive a sweet Swift treat!After receiving your treat, proceed downtown Shepherdstown to meet up with volunteers scouting out the Swift roosting location for the evening. Register Here!About our Host: Katelyn (KC) Walters, a Shepherdstown native, is our Associate Director of Conservation and Operations. KC is a Shepherd alumna, and holds a M.S. in Biology, with a focus in forest ecology, from James Madison University. Her master’s thesis evaluated the long-term effectiveness of treating hemlock trees for hemlock woolly adelgid infestation in Shenandoah National Park. During her college education, she interned with The Conservation Fund: Freshwater Institute and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. After graduation, she worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in southeastern Louisiana where she served as a forestry technician and became a certified Wildland Firefighter. KC then returned home to Shepherdstown and worked with Sustainable Solutions LLC as the Lead Natural Resources and GIS Technician. She joined the PVAS Team in April 2018 as the Land and Conservation Manager. Just shy of five years later, in January 2023, KC was promoted to the Associate Director position she holds today. KC enjoys riding horses, working with her dog, Paisley, on agility training, and stewarding the natural resources on her own property.

Garden Tour: Gardening for Native Plants and Pollinators

Join us in exploring a home garden and meadow designed for native plants and pollinators!PVAS Host: Penny Stritch, Larry Stritch Free and open to the public. This program is for adults. Registration is required and limited to 10 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible Join Penny and Larry Stritch for an educational tour through their garden in Martinsburg, which includes many native plants and was designed with pollinators in mind! If you love to learn about pollinators and their habitat, this is a tour you will not want to miss! About our Hosts: Penny Stritch did not have gardening experience in her childhood, but did appreciate what little of nature she found in Cook County, Illinois Forest Preserves and on yearly summer camping trips. She has always loved butterflies and photography, and was able to put the two of those together when the Stritch gardens started attracting lots of insects. She has documented 67 different species of butterflies on their property. Larry Stritch learned gardening as a young child from his mother and grandfather. He earned a PhD in botany at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1985. He then worked for the Illinois Department of Conservation for a few years before switching to the U.S. Forest Service. He was the National Botanist for the USFS from 1998 until his retirement in 2016. Since moving to West Virginia in 1998, he has filled his yard with many trees and woody plants, and also flower gardens and a prairie project. His two main goals are to have something in bloom at all times of the year and to attract pollinators.

Trail Stewards Volunteer Workday at Cool Spring Preserve

Join the Land Management and Conservation team for trail stewardship at Cool Spring Preserve!PVAS Host: Mason Zeller and Lily Davis Free and open to the public. Please note that we may not have an age-appropriate task for children, as these volunteer workdays are geared towards ages 16+. Children under 16 are welcome to attend, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Throughout the year we periodically host family-oriented volunteer workdays. Registration is required and limited to 12 participants. PVMN Volunteer Hours Eligible Summer is the BUSIEST time at the Nature Preserves! Help us maintain the trails and preserve features for summer campers and all of our visitors. All hands are welcome and helpful! Walking Distance: Approximately 1 milePace/Activities: Moderate to leisurely with several breaksExposure: Mostly under canopy coverTerrain: Grass covered hard ground/walking trailRestroom: Port-o-pot on siteParking/Where to Meet: The group will meet in the front parking lotWhat to Bring: Participants should wear sturdy, close-toed footwear, dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions. About Mason: Mason is originally from Kansas City and graduated from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo with a degree in political science and a minor in environmental studies. He has spent the last two years as a paralegal at a Los Angeles law firm, but has also spent time volunteering and working on a mayoral campaign in his hometown. He is excited by the opportunity to make an environmental impact locally through his position at PVAS, and is hoping this experience serves as a foundation for a career in land management and conservation. In his free time, Mason likes to read, watch movies, go to concerts, and explore local hiking trails. About Lily: Lily is currently studying Wildlife Management and Horticulture at WVU. She is also an active member of the WVU student chapter of The Wildlife Society. Growing up in West Virginia, Lily has always felt passionate about the outdoors, learning about the natural world, indulging in the local cryptid lore, and collecting the coolest stickers for her water bottle. This is her second summer with PVAS and she’s excited to be back serving the community. Fair warning, if you are ever hiking along the trails with Lily, be prepared to make a million stops, because spotting and identifying plants and critters along the way is a must!
