Teacher Workshop | Between Two Rivers: Connecting Watershed in the Classroom

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Join us with our partners in the West Virginia Outdoor Learning Network Initiative for a teacher workshop!PVAS Host: WV Outdoor Learning Network Initiative Free and open to all teachers in West Virginia counties in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Workshop is designed for teachers grades 4-9, however teachers of other grade levels are welcome. Registration is required and limited to 30 participants. Join us for a two-day immersive workshop designed for 4th–9th grade educators in the West Virginia Chesapeake Bay Watershed. From kayaking adventures to hands-on activities and expert guest speakers, this professional development experience will deepen your understanding of local waterways and how they connect us all—while equipping you with the knowledge to bring watershed education to life in your classroom. We’ll explore the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) framework—an approach that engages students in investigating local environmental issues and empowers them to take informed action. To get the most out of the workshop, we encourage all participants to complete the MWEE 101 course ahead of time. This workshop is open to teachers from all counties in West Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Watershed: Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, and Pendleton counties. Although this workshop is designed for 4th-9th grade teachers, other teachers are welcome. This opportunity is brought to you by WV Outdoor Learning Network Initiative. WV OLNI is a partnership of Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan County Public Schools, Cacapon Institute, and the Potomac Valley Audubon Society. Your fritillaries from your skippers? Join us for a look at West Virginia’s butterflies, their caterpillars, and their connection to pollinator and nectar plants. Kahoots are best played in a group setting so we are excited to join together with fellow players over Zoom. We will play as a group with Roy Boyle as our team leader and host. Roy will be available to answer any questions you may have at the beginning and along the way. How it works: After registering, you will receive a Zoom link to join the program.Log into Zoom at 7:30.You will be given a code to go to a Kahoot game via Zoom. Go to Kahoot.it and type in the code. Add your “game name” and start the game. It’s that simple!Using two devices allows you to see all the players on Zoom while seeing the questions and answers on your other screen.You will see the answer choices for each question on your Zoom screen. Ice Mountain Guided Tour

Join Potomac Valley Master Naturalists on a trip to Ice Mountain!PVAS Host: Roy Boyle – PVMN, Larry Lemons – Ice Mountain docent This is a free/donation-based program. This program is for adults. Pre-registration is required and limited to 20 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible Ice Mountain is a very special location in Hampshire County, WV owned by The Nature Conservancy! This preserve was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 2012 due to its outstanding biological and geological features. Ice Mountain gets its name from its unique geology and the resulting “”refrigeration”” effect in the cracks and crevices of Ice Mountain’s talus slopes! In this special spot, ice that forms in the winter is kept cold, often remaining visible in the summer! This unique microclimate supports a community of boreal plants typically found much further north. Historically, this spot was also home to 4th of July picnics with ice cream made from the mountain’s ice! It is only accessible via guided tours by appointment. Potomac Valley Master Naturalists have set up one of these special tours for us! Walking Distance: This walk will be several miles in length. Walking the full length of the trail along the North River to the caves plus the hike to the top of Ice Mountain is a round-trip of 2.5 miles, with an overall elevation gain of ~550 feet. Participants will not be required to hike to the top of Ice Mountain, but this option is recommended, as the view from the top is spectacular!Pace/Activities: The pace will be set by the group.Exposure: Mostly under canopy coverTerrain: Earthen trail with some hilly, rocky sections that could be slippery when wet. The trail along the North River to visit the ice caves is fairly moderate, with gentle inclines. There is also the opportunity to go to the top of Ice Mountain, which involves hiking up a steep rocky incline.Restroom: You are welcome to use the outhouse behind the Old Inn, and there is a porta potty between the old inn and the church. If you prefer the flush variety, you might want to stop at the store in Capon Bridge or Slanesville. Be sure to bring water and snacks or a lunch.
