  The Reality Store is a financial literacy event in which students learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making, and career planning. The Reality Store will help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations. After their trip through The Reality Store, students will have developed a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have.   Event Overview: Prior to the event students choose the future career and receive their monthly salary deposited in their checking account. Students enter The Reality Store with their check book. They first stop at “Uncle Sam” for their tax deduction. They then proceed to “The Bank/Credit Union” for their student loan deduction. Students then have to visit 13 other booths making purchases for their life. Ex: buy a car, home, groceries, utilities, etc... Volunteers: Staff one of the various booths Assist students in making wise financial choices based on their salary  No experience necessary Event goals for the students: Learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making and career planning Help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations Develop a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have. In order to keep this event focused on education, we ask that volunteers do not bring promotional items to The Reality Store. If you would like to donate promotional items for the students, contact The Chamber. Please feel free to wear your company’s logo apparel. We appreciate your commitment to our area youth and look forward to your participation and support in this most exciting event. The game of chess offers many brainy benefits—and it's just fun! Those of all abilities and ages (6-years plus, please) are welcome, but staff will not offer formal instruction. Chessboards provided and library materials are available for further learning. No registration is required, but please remember that children under the age of 8 (even prodigies!) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

On its maiden voyage, the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on April 14th, 1912. While the story of the tragedy is world-famous, the granular details of how the disaster unfolded reveal a complicated series of events, decisions, and mechanical failures.   Join maritime archaeologist Caitlin Zant as she returns for an immersive breakdown of the night Titanic sank. This presentation provides a deep dive into the sinking's timeline, from the first iceberg warnings to the moments before the ship disappeared beneath the waves forever.   About the speaker: Caitlin Zant is the Research & Communications Specialist at NOAA’s Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary. She has led numerous Great Lakes archaeological projects, public presentations, and outreach events, and has assisted in nominating over 25 Wisconsin shipwrecks to the National and State Registers of Historic Places. She is a leading voice in preserving underwater heritage sites.   Doors and cash bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. Join Manitowoc Public Library and Master Gardeners of Manitowoc County on Thursday, April 9, from 6-7:30 PM, for an evening focused on “Gardening for Hummingbirds,” a program that Kathy and Michael Rock have been giving to countless groups in the Upper Midwest and beyond for going on 15 years. Kathi and Michael will help you learn how to create a sanctuary for hummingbirds in your own backyard. Through the use of perennial and annual plants, wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and hummingbird feeders, you too can discover the magic and excitement of hummingbirds! Their presentation will cover identification of the Ruby-throated hummingbird, ideal habitat, migration, nesting, feeding, importance of water features, and how the elements of the best hummingbird feeders and plants can bring you up close to these special birds. In addition to presenting at the Sedona Hummingbird Festival in Arizona, The Rocks have given their presentation at the Wisconsin Public Television Garden Expo and the Chicago Garden and Flower Show.  A few other familiar venues for their program include Wildbirds Unlimited, Audubon Societies, and Master Gardener Clubs.
