Since gaining prominence in the early 2000’s, ukulele marvel Jake Shimabukuro has mesmerized audiences with his innovative and dynamic style, taking the instrument to dizzying new heights. Over a dozen solo albums, Shimabukuro has shown a knack for moving effortlessly between genres, sometimes in the same song. After being taught the instrument by his mother at age four, Jake became a local phenom, performing on his own and in a local group Pure Heart. Early in his solo career he became a YouTube sensation when his cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral. Since then, Jake has gone on to play the world’s most venerable venues, from The Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House and The N.O. Jazz Fests and collaborated with some of the world’s greatest musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Jimmy Buffett, Jack Johnson, Bette Midler, Ziggy Marley, Sonny Landreth, Billy Strings, Lukas & Willie Nelson and Warren Haynes. Shimabukuro has also won his share of awards and, just a few years ago he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a Member for the National Council on the Arts. One strong thread that runs through much of Shimabukuro’s work is that of collaboration. From the Trio album to Jake & Friends to Grateful and beyond, Shimabukuro thrives in the ability to feed off and inspire his fellow musicians.

Hailing from both the Appalachian and Piedmont regions of North Carolina, the Rangers have long held traditional bluegrass paramount, while possessing an exceptional ability to bring it down the mountain, and to incorporate accessible influence from all walks of the region. With the band’s last few albums, they have gained recognition from well beyond the world of bluegrass, earning a reputation as some of the most influential songwriters in Americana today. Newcomer to this ship, Aaron Burdett, brings a soul-stirring element to the Rangers’ mastery of mountain music. Burdett is an award-winning singer-songwriter, and a student of folk tradition. He provides a fresh, emotional context to the songbook, which “can reach out and touch your heart or slap you in the face,” to use the praise of drummer and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Ashworth. The son of a small-town farming community, Cody Diekhoff logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer before settling in the city in 2003. Profoundly inspired by fellow Midwesterner John Prine, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. His small-town roots, tilled with city streets mentality, are turning heads North and South of I-80. “I love the energy, music, and creativity of Chicago, but at the same time, the roots and hard work of my small town,” he shares. Growing up in Delavan, Illinois, with a population less than 2,000, Diekhoff’s grandparents were farmers, and their values have always provided the baseline of his songs. He writes music for “the kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan, everyone has a story, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way,” he says. “My generation may have been labeled as slackers, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t work hard – many people I know put in 50-60 hours a week and 12-hour days. That’s what keeps me playing. I don’t like anyone to be left out; my music is for everyone in big and very small towns.” He listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend’s dad playing Hank Williams, and it was a revelation. Prine and Guthrie quickly followed. The name Chicago Farmer was originally for a band, but the utilitarian life of driving alone from bar to bar, city to city - to make a direct connection to his audience and listener, took a deeper hold.

As part of the lead-up to Syttende Mai, Livsreise welcomes back Terje M. Joranger, Ph.D. for his 3rd presentation. He is the director of research at the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Hedmark County Norway and professor of history at Inland University with campuses throughout east-central Norway. This presentation will center on his current research about identity formulation among Norwegian immigrants in the Upper Midwest. One study area is Blue Mounds, Wisconsin in Dane County. The other area is the southern and western part of Pope County, Minnesota. Both areas are branded as “Norwegian” today. Project: Constellation’s Scandinavian music contribution picks up where most people’s knowledge of the Swedish/Norwegian languages and culture seems to have left off, 1890-today. Enjoy Swedish and Norwegian Children’s songs, Eurovision winners, 80s rock, contemporary, holiday songs, and more. Constellation is a violin/guitar husband and wife duo out of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Half the band is authentically Scandinavian since Satiago grew up in Sweden. Refreshments will be served! Celebrate Norwegian Heritage at the Stoughton Syttende Mai Festival!   Visit Stoughton's Syttende Mai festival for a weekend of family-friendly fun and cultural experiences where there's something for everyone. Come join us for three days of parades, arts, food and drink, kid's activities and plenty of Norwegian culture for the whole family. Syttende Mai takes place annually on the weekend closest to Norway's Constitution Day, celebrated in Norway on May 17th. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Stoughton enjoyed an influx of Norwegians and at one time, as many as 75 percent of its residents spoke Norwegian. These immigrants celebrated Syttende Mai unofficially, but it became an annual, city-wide tradition in the 1950s. Norwegians throughout the world continue to celebrate May 17 as Syttende Mai, the Norwegian Constitution Day. Feel Quill is an interactive art installation in which feather quills punctuate cast concrete forming Braille text. During this event Dave Ballmann, a Braille reader, will touch and read texts including Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Hope” is the thing with feathers,” giving others a unique opportunity to see how words are felt. no.5: Feel Quill by Leslie Iwai Playing on the idea of the quill pen as a writing instrument, artist Leslie Iwai explores themes of written and tactile communication by transforming the feather quill from an ink channel into a sensory “dot” to form a representation of Braille’s embossed text. As quills emerge from a concrete surface to form Braille cells, transcribed texts, including Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Hope” is the thing with feathers,” viewers are given a unique opportunity to see how words are felt.
