Do you have an old household appliance that doesn't work anymore? Bring it down to the library! In your 1-hour, one-on-one session, library staff will work with you to diagnose and find a solution to the problem. Using our selection of Makerspace tools, you’ll actively be engaged in repairing your items with support from our library volunteer and staff! Due to high demand, we ask that community members sign up for a single occurrence of this series so that as many community members as possible can participate in this experience.

Beginning basket makers and those with no experience are welcome and encouraged to sign up for this one-day basketry workshop. During the workshop, students will make one basket while learning foundational weaving techniques. These techniques can be applied to a myriad of other weaving materials, including metal wire. The first steps in this basket workshop start with a demonstration of how to establish the interwoven basket base from the beginning. Students will follow and be guided step by step while creating their basket. These baskets are made from dyed round reed employing over/under and twining techniques. Ample hands-on attention will be given to each student during the weaving process. All tools are provided for use during the workshop. The weaving material round reed has been dyed and prepared prior to the workshop. Students will have a multitude of colors to choose from. A handout will be provided for students to keep. It contains the materials punch list for this project, a supplier list of where to purchase materials and basketry tools, and basketry guild information.  Please note that hand strength is required for basket making. Through their experience, students will learn the following:  How to shape the basket. Methods to use for tension and hand placement with the weaving materials. Useful basketry tools.  How to select weaving materials for future projects.  Dyeing and finishing round reed baskets.

Chen-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) is widely acknowledged as the ancestor of all other styles of Taijiquan. This class will introduce the Chen-style Taijiquan form, Silk-reeling Exercises and Wuji Qigong. The Chen-style Taijiquan form is soft and graceful with strong rooted stands that will help students to develop strength, balance, coordination and an understanding of basic Taiji principles. Silk-reeling Exercises are a series of spiral movements that promote muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain. Wuji Qigong (standing meditation) will help students to cultivate internal energy (qi) with proper body alignment for better internal energy flow which will enhance their immune systems and to reduce physical and mental stress.

Gem Painting is taking the crafting world by storm. It’s the perfect mixture of paint-by-numbers and mosaic art, without the paint! Instead, tiny gems make a beautiful pattern and sparkle in the light. Gem Painting is a recurring series that invites creative makers to gather together in the same place on a regular basis. If you are interested in participating, be sure to register for the series, attend the first date, and then drop in on any dates that work for your schedule so you can work on your masterpiece. Participants are not required to attend every session, but we will only be accepting new participants on a monthly basis. As this project aims to gather creative makers in the community, each participant's gem painting materials will be labeled and held at the library until the month is complete. Check the schedule below for when we will provide canvases to new participants and when we will only allow pre-existing participants to drop in. May 6, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM -- Canvases available for new participants May 18. 12:30 PM-2:30 PM -- Drop in for pre-existing participants. New canvases will not be available at this session. Create your own stunning Turkish mosaic lamp in this hands-on workshop!
