Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In May the Cupertino Library Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will talk about “The Mapmaker’s Wife: a true tale of love, murder, and survival in the Amazon” by Robert Whitaker. (2024) Jean Godin, a young French mapmaker was the youngest member of a scientific mission lead by Charles-Marie de La Condamine to Peru in 1736 to determine “ the distance of one degree of latitude at the equator.” Godin also met Isabel Gramesón, an upper class 13 year-old Peruvian girl and married her, intending to take her back to France with him when the expedition was completed. After completing his work with his expedition party a decade later Godin was refused permission to return west to Peru to reunite with his wife since that part of the continent was under Spanish control. Since he could not come to her, Isabel had to come to him once he had raised enough money to pay for her journey. Isabel’s difficult journey through some of the Amazon rain forest’s most dangerous territory, cost her the lives of two of her brothers, making her eventual arrival in French Guiana and her reunion with her husband almost miraculous. Join us for a fun and creative Beginners Basket Weaving workshop. Whether you're a seasoned crafter or a complete newbie, this workshop is perfect for anyone looking to learn the art of basket weaving. Spend some time with us and create your very own handmade basket to take home. Don't miss this opportunity to unleash your creativity and learn a new skill! All materials and tools to create a small basket will be provided in this workshop. Artist and Weaver: Menlo Park, CA based artist, Linda Tapscott, has been honing her skills as a basket maker for the past several years. Originally a mixed-media artist, she blends her interest in fiber art, natural materials, and upcycling with basket sculpture. Moving from 2D to 3D has been an exciting process for Linda. Tapscott has exhibited her artwork throughout the Bay Area, including the Sanchez Art Center 50/50 Show in 2017 and 2023. Through her membership in the Bay Area Basket Makers Guild, she has been able to showcase her work at various galleries and museums.
