In this workshop series, kids will learn about coding and electronics through creative and playful activities with the BBC micro:bit, a “microcontroller” designed for students that can be used for a wide variety of electronics projects. Workshops will cover all kinds of topics including games, art, and sports,with space for kids to explore their interests. There are six unique, standalone workshops in this series and each will be focused on a different activity. Join us for one, a few, or all!These workshops are best suited for youth ages 9-11. Basic computer skills, such as the ability to use a mouse and keyboard and navigate a website, are preferred. According to makerspace policy, an adult caregiver must be present during the workshop. This is a family-friendly workshop; we encourage adults to participate alongside their children!Electronics StudioFrom April to June, STUDIO 24 will be dedicated to playful and practical explorations of electronics. Classes and drop-in experiences will cover a variety of topics from the fundamentals of circuits and coding to creative projects that bring technology and art together. We will explore how to incorporate programmable color-changing LED lights into artwork and art practices. We'll start by exploring lights and lighting effects. Next, you'll learn how to code LED lights to change colors and create unique lighting patterns. Finally, you'll have an opportunity to strategize about how you might incorporate LED lights into your practice in a supportive and collaborative group environment. No experience with electronics or coding is required. BLDG 61 is so lucky to have 3 lasers available to the public. Make a tool appointment to use one of our lasers during this time. Please watch the Laser Orientation Video before arriving if you are new to laser cutting. The 120 Watt is for experienced laser users only, please book our 75W or 40W laser if you are new to laser cutting. The 40 W laser is the only laser with the capability to use the rotary tool and etch on round surfaces. All three lasers operating at once is loud! Please be prepared to wear hearing protection.

No walk-ins can be accepted, so be cool and book ahead!Make a Tool Appointment Sessions are COLOR-CODED based on the level of supervision a specific tool requires. Tools in the ‘Yellow’ category require the least staff guidance. Tools in the ‘Green’ category require some guidance. And tools in the ‘Pink’ category require the most supervision. The machines available in each session are listed below. Staff are not able to change your category. It is up to patrons to select which category provides access to the tools they need. If they do not yet know which tools they need, patrons should attend Open Studio to make a plan for their project. Have you ever wondered how electricity works? In this workshop, young inventors will build their own circuits using copper tape, LEDs, and batteries. Through hands-on experiments, participants will discover how electricity flows, why polarity matters, and what materials are capable of conducting electricity. This workshop is taught by Ruhan Yang, a PhD student at the ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder and designer of educational toys and tools.This workshop is most appropriate for lower elementary school-aged learners, ages 5-9.If you are an adult caregiver or parent, please register just your child (or children) for the workshop. You do not need to complete a registration form for yourself. Adult caregivers and parents are invited and encouraged to participate alongside children, and at least one adult must be present to accompany their child in the makerspace.Electronics StudioFrom April to June, STUDIO 24 will be dedicated to playful and practical explorations of electronics. Classes and drop-in experiences will cover a variety of topics from the fundamentals of circuits and coding to creative projects that bring technology and art together. BLDG 61 is so lucky to have 3 lasers available to the public. Make a tool appointment to use one of our lasers during this time. Please watch the Laser Orientation Video before arriving if you are new to laser cutting. The 120 Watt is for experienced laser users only, please book our 75W or 40W laser if you are new to laser cutting. The 40 W laser is the only laser with the capability to use the rotary tool and etch on round surfaces. All three lasers operating at once is loud! Please be prepared to wear hearing protection.

The BLDG 61 woodshop is available by appointment only. No walk-ins can be accepted, so be cool and book ahead!Make a Tool Appointment Sessions are COLOR-CODED based on the level of supervision a specific tool requires. Tools in the ‘Yellow’ category require the least staff guidance. Tools in the ‘Green’ category require some guidance. And tools in the ‘Pink’ category require the most supervision. The machines available in each session are listed below. Staff are not able to change your category. It is up to patrons to select which category provides access to the tools they need. If they do not yet know which tools they need, patrons should attend Open Studio to make a plan for their project. All experience levels and ages are welcome. Open Studio Equipment and Software: Sewing machines, Sergers, Dye Sublimation Printers, Heat Press, and design software such as the Adobe Suite and Blender on our laptops and computers. Safety and Use RequirementsAll patrons who visit the makerspaces must adhere to the Makerspace Use Policy. Minors (under 18) must have a parent/adult guardian agree to and sign the Acknowledgement of Risk and Release Form before entering the space. Patrons under the age of fourteen must be supervised by a parent or adult guardian.
