The Cultural Council’s Art in Public Places program has been exhibiting works of art around the county since 2015. Local artists who are Cultural Council members have the opportunity to exhibit their art for the public to enjoy in places that might otherwise be left baron. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Even without knowing the subjects, subtle details—like a glance or a touch—convey a shared moment, offering deeper insight into the image’s significance. The final section redefines the concept of the double portrait by showcasing unconventional examples. Figures may be reflected in mirrors, seen in photographs that appear within other photographs, or represented through fragmented or partially obscured depictions. These images challenge traditional portraiture, emphasizing presence through suggestion rather than direct depiction. It is a time of love, laughter, and festivities, in which our Head Start children get all excited when opening their gifts. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Even without knowing the subjects, subtle details—like a glance or a touch—convey a shared moment, offering deeper insight into the image’s significance. The final section redefines the concept of the double portrait by showcasing unconventional examples. Figures may be reflected in mirrors, seen in photographs that appear within other photographs, or represented through fragmented or partially obscured depictions. These images challenge traditional portraiture, emphasizing presence through suggestion rather than direct depiction. The Women, by Kristin Hannah, offers the story of one woman gone to war as a nurse in Vietnam, and it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way, whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era. Kicking off the season’s first Book Review Breakfast at 9:30am Monday, Nov. 3, Michelle L. Auton, U.S. Army Veteran Service Offices, will review The Women, by Kristin Hannah. The Book Review Breakfast is in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College, 6155 College Lane, Vero Beach. Sponsored by the AAUW-Vero Beach, the Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public. Michelle graduated from high school in 1989 and enlisted in the United States Army later that same year. Serving first as a nuclear weapons specialist in Germany, Michelle later qualified as a combat medic, serving the 24th Infantry Battalion in Fort Stewart, Georgia. After her service, Michelle shifted to specializing in senior care in the skilled nursing and assisted living settings as a National Certified Dementia Practitioner, National Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional and a State Certified Assisted Living Administrator. Today, Michelle continues to serve as a Veteran Service Officer and passionate Veteran Advocate, dedicating countless volunteer hours to support her fellow veterans and their families throughout the community. Her commitment to service didn’t end with her uniform, it simply evolved into a new mission: standing beside those who served. AAUW-Vero Beach has been sponsoring Book Review Breakfasts as a service to the community for 40 years. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Even without knowing the subjects, subtle details—like a glance or a touch—convey a shared moment, offering deeper insight into the image’s significance. The final section redefines the concept of the double portrait by showcasing unconventional examples. Figures may be reflected in mirrors, seen in photographs that appear within other photographs, or represented through fragmented or partially obscured depictions. These images challenge traditional portraiture, emphasizing presence through suggestion rather than direct depiction. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Even without knowing the subjects, subtle details—like a glance or a touch—convey a shared moment, offering deeper insight into the image’s significance. The final section redefines the concept of the double portrait by showcasing unconventional examples. Figures may be reflected in mirrors, seen in photographs that appear within other photographs, or represented through fragmented or partially obscured depictions. These images challenge traditional portraiture, emphasizing presence through suggestion rather than direct depiction. Jassen Allen began singing at church in Iowa. A music teacher took him under her wing, hoping the young Black man would become another Simon Estes, Iowa’s famed African American bass-baritone. The teacher convinced Allen to enter talent shows at the Iowa State Fair. “I never won the talent shows, but I got better and better and learned how to be an individual performer,” Allen said. The young artist realized that performing as a solo act was what he wanted to do, and he found his first performing jobs at theme parks in Florida and Texas. From there, he was a production singer on a variety of cruise ship lines. He spent 10 years seeing the world and honing his craft. Then it was time to settle down on dry land. He moved to Los Angeles. Allen became “a very good waiter” and also found work as a performer. He was cast in the Civic Light Opera’s award-winning production of Dream Girls and became a popular singer for special events from Los Angeles to Europe. In 2006, Allen moved to Las Vegas, where again, he was “a very good waiter.” After several rough years, he established himself as a Las Vegas entertainer and wrote a tribute show to Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston. The show, a hit, was held at Ron DeCar’s Event Center. “I finally had my name in lights on the Strip,” Allen said. “Well, it was down the Strip a ways, but it was there.” Now, the Vegas headliner has put together a tribute to the legendary Lionel Richie, called All Night Long. Richie, the songwriter and co-founder of the Commodores, wrote hits like “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Still,” as well as Billboard Hot 100 single for Kenny Rogers, “Lady.” He recorded “Endless Love” with Diana Ross, and it is still among the top 20 best-selling singles of all time. Richie has won four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for “We Are the World,” which he co-wrote with Michael Jackson, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Allen considers his show not only a tribute, but a celebration. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Even without knowing the subjects, subtle details—like a glance or a touch—convey a shared moment, offering deeper insight into the image’s significance. The final section redefines the concept of the double portrait by showcasing unconventional examples. Figures may be reflected in mirrors, seen in photographs that appear within other photographs, or represented through fragmented or partially obscured depictions. These images challenge traditional portraiture, emphasizing presence through suggestion rather than direct depiction. Encounter the Complexities of Human Relationships, Memory and Identity, in Double Portraits, A Layered and Multifaceted Portrait of the American South Discover the diverse ways artists depict human connection, presence, and absence within a shared frame, at Double Portraits, an original photography exhibition on view at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) October 25, 2025, through January 11, 2026. This exhibition features 47 photographs by 34 artists, each capturing the rich and ever-evolving American South through the concept of a “double portrait.” The exhibition was curated by VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, with photographs on loan from the Collection of the Do Good Fund, Columbus, Georgia. “In a time when countless images flood our screens each day, Double Portraits invites viewers to slow down and consider what photography can reveal when created with intention and a distinct point of view,” shares VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “The exhibition features portraits of individuals from the Florida Everglades to Mississippi highways to Atlanta suburbs—taken by artists ranging from emerging talents to Guggenheim fellows.” Divided into four thematic sections, the works demonstrate the many ways photography captures the complexities of human relationships, memory, and identity—offering a layered and multifaceted portrait of the American South. The first section explores traditional portraiture, showcasing photographs like Rineke Dijkstra’s, in which subjects are centrally framed, fully visible, and clearly identifiable as individuals. From here, the exhibition transitions to artists who incorporate vernacular photographic styles, often embracing a “snapshot aesthetic” to depict two people together in often casual or spontaneous moments. This approach highlights photography’s power to convey intimacy and emotional resonance. The third section explores the themes of connection and care. A portrait featuring two people naturally suggests a story, as the viewer instinctively looks for meaning in their interaction. Even without knowing the subjects, subtle details—like a glance or a touch—convey a shared moment, offering deeper insight into the image’s significance. The final section redefines the concept of the double portrait by showcasing unconventional examples. Figures may be reflected in mirrors, seen in photographs that appear within other photographs, or represented through fragmented or partially obscured depictions. These images challenge traditional portraiture, emphasizing presence through suggestion rather than direct depiction.
