Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s Tuesday, May 13th, 5:00P.M. When the Library hosts,in partnership with Independent Lens, the documentary, “Matter of Mind: MyAlzheimer’s.” The documentary is an intimate portrayal of three familiesconfronting the unique challenges of Alzheimer's and how this progressiveneuro-degenerative disease transforms roles and relationships. Whether it’s apartner becoming a caregiver or an adult child shifting into being theirparent’s caretaker, these stories show how families evolve when a loved one isdiagnosed. Following the screening, representatives with the Illinois ValleyAlzheimer’s Group will share information on resources available in thecommunity, and Library staff will provide information on memory kits availablethrough the Library, and how everyday citizens can contribute to Alzheimerresearch with Stall Catchers, an online game created by the Human ComputationInstitute at Cornell University. The film is one hour in length, and theconversation will be approximately forty-five minutes to one hour. Matter ofMind: My Alzheimer's premieres on PBS on May 5th.

Movie Matinee: Painting the Modern Garden:  From Monet to Matisse Tuesday, May 20th, 1:00P.M. Library screens thedocumentary, “Painting the Modern Garden: From Monet to Matisse.” For manygreat artists, the garden has long been considered a desirable subject for theexpression of color, light and atmosphere. Claude Monet is perhaps the mostwell-known painter of gardens, but other greats such as Van Gogh, Pissarro,Matisse and Sargent all viewed the garden as a meaningful focus for theirtalents. This documentary takes a magical journey from the gallery to thegardens, to Giverny and Seebüll and other glorious grounds favored by artists,and how early twentieth century artists designed and cultivated their owngardens to explore contemporary utopian ideas and motifs of color and form. Thedocumentary is one hour and thirty minutes in length, not rated, and is madepossible through public performance rights through Kanopy.

The Happy Invention: History and Significance of Picture Postcards Thursday, May 22nd, 6:00P.M. Listen to a presentationon the history and significance of picture postcards. The first picturepostcards were published for the 1889 Paris Exposition, celebrating thecompletion of the Eiffel Tower. In America, the first picture postcards wereprinted for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, making Illinoisthe birthplace of this invention in America. Since those flowery Victorianoriginals, uncountable billions of 10 postcards of every aspect of life havebeen printed, depicting train stations, bandstands, street views, cartoons, adsfor products and services, social history both whimsical and dark, andeverything in between. Katherine Hamilton-Smith, the founding curator of theTeich Archives, presents a look at the documentary power and significance ofpicture postcards in this presentation. She touches on the Curt Teich Companyof Chicago, the role Illinois played in the history and development ofpostcards, and on the picture postcard as a cultural icon. This program is madepossible through the Illinois Humanities. Illinois Humanities is supported inpart by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy Demands Wisdom andthe Illinois General Assembly [through the Illinois Arts Council Agency], aswell as by contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
