The 2025-2026 VFW Patriots' Pen Essay Contest is now open! This national writing competition gives middle school students the chance to share their voices on this yearâs theme:  How Are You Showing Patriotism & Support for Our Country? đ What you need to know: ¡   Write an essay between 300 and 400 words. Essays are judged on: o  Knowledge of the theme (30 pts) o  Theme development (35 pts) o  Clarity of ideas (35 pts) ¡   Winners can advance from local to state and even national levels. The grand prize is $5,000 ! đĄ Why enter? This is a great chance to share your perspective, gain recognition, and possibly earn scholarships. đHow to participate: Submit your essay to me or directly to our local VFW Post by the deadline. If youâd like help getting started, see me in the counseling officeâIâll be glad to guide you. Letâs show our voices and patriotism! Deadline is October 31.

Scholarship Value Up to $20,000 per student $2,500 per semester (up to 8 semesters) Must be used for undergraduate degrees at Kansas colleges Must be used within 5 years of high school graduation Selection Criteria The scholarship reflects Earlâs own valuesâhard work, initiative, and resourcefulness. These qualities may be demonstrated through school, employment, or personal activities. Elibility Applicants must: Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident Be a graduating senior attending a high school in Saline County, Kansas, or the Salina Adult Education Center Demonstrate a strong work ethic and enterprising potential Be scheduled to graduate from a public/private high school or earn a GED Hold at least a 2.5 GPA (high school) or a GED score of 660 Apply as a full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours per semester) at an accredited Kansas college
