NOMA provides guided tours of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden every Sunday. During these tours, you’ll learn about a selection of the 100 large-scale works installed in the garden. No registration is required. NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden is free and open to all, seven days a week. Tours start at the main entrance gate to the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Dueling Oaks Drive.

Our tai chi classes are led by instructor Barry Goodman.  Class is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Tai chi participants meet at the garden entrance on the corner of Collins Diboll Circle and Enrique Alferez Drive, across the street from Café NOMA. Please bring a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. If you are a member paying in cash, please also bring your membership card or member number. About the Instructor After ten years of studying the Yang Intermediate Tai Chi form in the lineage of Da Liu under the instruction of Marilyn Yank, Barry Goodman was invited to teach Tai Chi for the V.A. for five years as adjunct therapy for veterans living with PTSD. Goodman is a Supreme Science Level 1 Qigong instructor, and has had the good fortune to study various Tai Chi forms with visiting scholars from China, as well as ten years of practicing with Terry Rappold and Jamie Babin at NOMA. Goodman has also taught at the Kinship Elderly Care Facility, the JCC Uptown, and NOMA.     About the ClassThe first 30 minutes of class focus on simple celestial elemental Qigong forms, a gentle and accessible style of movement suitable for anyone. Jackson’s collection is this year’s One Book One New Orleans selection, as well as NOMA’s Book Club pick for September 2026. You can register for this month’s Book Club discussion of Libre here. She has been a finalist for the Iowa Review Poetry Award, the RATTLE Poetry Prize and was the recipient of the AWP Intro Journals Award. Her work was also chosen by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins for inclusion in the Library of Congress Poetry 180 Project. Jackson’s debut poetry collection, Libre, was published by Regalo Press and nationally distributed by Simon & Schuster. Libre was also selected as the One Book One New Orleans’ chosen book for 2026. She was also recently highlighted as one of Gambit Magazine’s “40 Under 40” honorees. She currently serves as a Visiting Writer at Xavier University of Louisiana. About Lisa Ann Walter Lisa Ann Walter’s career spans television, film and stage. She currently stars as Melissa Schemmenti in ABC’s Emmy-nominated, SAG Award Best Comedy Ensemble-winning “Abbott Elementary.” She is a successful stand up comedian, having spent the last 20 years touring the US to sold-out venues. This spring, her first ever stand-up special will premiere on Hulu. Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local photographer biseat yawkal. Participants will be inspired by NOMA’s permanent collection, as well as works on view in the upcoming exhibition Confluence: The Tina Freeman Collection of Photographs. They will learn how to operate a camera, use peer review to gain more skills in photography, as well as how to mat and frame their photographs. Students will also draw inspiration from the natural life found in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden to inform their practice. Please note: Having your own personal camera is not a requirement for workshop participation. However, participants who have their own camera are welcome to use theirs for the workshop. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, as the content will build on creating a comprehensive piece. Registration for the entire workshop series is $55 for members and $65 for other participants. Climate change, migration, improvisational black art forms, and resilience through diversity have inspired biseat’s growth as an artist. biseat was raised in central California, an agriculturally important but socially overlooked region of the Golden State. There, the mentorship of a ceramics instructor and admiration for the photo lab at their high school sparked biseat’s imagination. After a twenty-year hiatus from artistic exploration, biseat reconnected with their love for clay, photography, and mixed media through a change in perspective and environment. About Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMAEstablished in 2022 as part of the Vitality Arts Project for Art Museums funded by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy, Art Thrives is NOMA’s Creative Aging initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. Drawing from a variety of teaching traditions, Sara creates thoughtfully structured, predictable sequences that support attunement to the body and mind. Her teaching invites students to practice discomfort with patience while cultivating alignment, breath awareness, and greater capacity—both on and off the mat. Chambers and Andrea Okamura Professor of the History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. He is the author of many books and articles on Japanese and East Asian art, including the prize-winning Painting of the Realm: The Kano House of Painters in Seventeenth-Century Japan (University of Washington Press, 2012) and Colorful Realm: Japanese Bird-and-Flower Paintings by Itō Jakuchū (National Gallery of Art, 2012), and most recently Ten Kings of Hell: The Afterlife in Medieval Korea (with Sooa Im McCormick, Cleveland Museum of Art, 2026) and “The Shōsōin Imperial Treasury: Three Perspectives” (Archives of Asian Art, 2026). Lippit has taught at the Universities of Tokyo, Heidelberg, Los Andes, Campinas, and Melbourne. From 2013 to 2018, he served as the Johnson-Kulukundis Family Faculty Director of the Arts at the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study, and in 2018 was appointed Harvard College Professor for distinguished contributions to undergraduate teaching. John T. CarpenterJohn T. Carpenter, Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese Art, has been at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, since 2011. For a dozen years before then, he taught the history of Japanese art at SOAS, University of London, and served as head of the London office of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures. He has published widely on Japanese art, especially in the areas of calligraphy, painting, and woodblock prints, and served as the editor of Hokusai and His Age: Ukiyo-e Painting, Printmaking, and Book Illustration in Late Edo Japan (2005) and Reading Surimono: The Interplay of Text and Image in Japanese Prints (2008). Since arriving at The Met he has overseen numerous exhibitions and helped write and edit the accompanying catalogues, including:  Designing Nature: The Rinpa Aesthetic in Japanese Art  (2012)   The Poetry of Nature: Edo Paintings from the Fishbein-Bender Collection (2018 Chinese edition 2021) The Tale of Genji: A Japanese Classic Illuminated (2019) and, most recently, The Three Perfections: Japanese Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting The Mary and Cheney Cowles Collection (2025). Frank Feltens Frank Feltens is the Susan Brotman Chief Curator at the Seattle Art Museum. He was previously Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Japanese Art at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art. He holds a PhD in Japanese art history from Columbia University and has organized exhibitions on traditional, modern, and contemporary, most recently Into the Waters with Senju and Bingyi: Two Contemporary Paintings at the Smithsonian and Shin-Hanga: From Kiyochika to Hasui at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Tokyo. He has published numerous books, among them Ogata Kōrin: Art in Early Modern Japan. Tomoko Sakomura Tomoko Sakomura is Professor of Art History at Swarthmore College whose work explores the relationships between text and image in Japanese art and design, including a new project on calligraphy and handwriting. Her book Poetry as Image: The Visual Culture of Waka in Sixteenth-Century Japan (Leiden: Brill, 2016) examined visual representations of Japanese classical court poetry and how they promoted the courtly present as elegant instruments of elite self-representation. Sakomura holds a PhD in art history and archaeology from Columbia University. About the ExhibitionSecond Nature: Japanese Rinpa Paintings from the Gitter-Yelen Collection includes prominent early artists of the Rinpa lineage such as Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558-1637), Tawaraya Sōtatsu (ca. 1600-1640), and Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716), all of whom were active in Kyoto. It is distinguished, however, by its focus on later Rinpa painters, such as Nakamura Hōchū (d. 1819), Sakai Hōitsu (1767-1828), and Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1858). These latter painters were active in Osaka and Edo and took the school in new artistic directions. Not only does Second Nature feature rare and unique works by these artists, but it proposes that Hōitsu be understood as the “founder” of Rinpa, as it was his rediscovery and revival of his predecessor Kōrin that formed the foundation of this school. And as conveyed by the works in the Gitter-Yelen Collection, it was the disciples of Hōitsu active in Edo from the 1820s onward that spread consciousness of Rinpa as a lineage and painting style.  Second Nature: Japanese Rinpa Paintings from the Gitter-Yelen Collection is organized by NOMA and curated by Yukio Lippit, Professor of the History of Japanese Art at Harvard University. The exhibition is is sponsored by the Blakemore Foundation. About the Instructor After ten years of studying the Yang Intermediate Tai Chi form in the lineage of Da Liu under the instruction of Marilyn Yank, Barry Goodman was invited to teach Tai Chi for the V.A. for five years as adjunct therapy for veterans living with PTSD. Goodman is a Supreme Science Level 1 Qigong instructor, and has had the good fortune to study various Tai Chi forms with visiting scholars from China, as well as ten years of practicing with Terry Rappold and Jamie Babin at NOMA. Goodman has also taught at the Kinship Elderly Care Facility, the JCC Uptown, and NOMA.     About the ClassThe first 30 minutes of class focus on simple celestial elemental Qigong forms, a gentle and accessible style of movement suitable for anyone. The second part of class explores progressive sequential movements from the “Tai Chi Easy” form developed by Roger Jahnke, O.M.D., director of Integral Institute of Tai Chi and Qigong Center. In many martial, exercise, healing, and meditative traditions, attainment is the central aim. Our invitation is something different: to release, through the spirit of play, any obstruction that separates us from well being and harmony.

Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local photographer biseat yawkal. Participants will be inspired by NOMA’s permanent collection, as well as works on view in the upcoming exhibition Confluence: The Tina Freeman Collection of Photographs. They will learn how to operate a camera, use peer review to gain more skills in photography, as well as how to mat and frame their photographs. Students will also draw inspiration from the natural life found in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden to inform their practice. Please note: Having your own personal camera is not a requirement for workshop participation. However, participants who have their own camera are welcome to use theirs for the workshop. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, as the content will build on creating a comprehensive piece. Registration for the entire workshop series is $55 for members and $65 for other participants. About biseat yawkal​biseat yawkal, originally from a family of farmers, was born in the Horn of Africa in 1984. biseat’s work interrogates and illuminates the journey of a reluctant refugee. Climate change, migration, improvisational black art forms, and resilience through diversity have inspired biseat’s growth as an artist. biseat was raised in central California, an agriculturally important but socially overlooked region of the Golden State. There, the mentorship of a ceramics instructor and admiration for the photo lab at their high school sparked biseat’s imagination. After a twenty-year hiatus from artistic exploration, biseat reconnected with their love for clay, photography, and mixed media through a change in perspective and environment. About Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMAEstablished in 2022 as part of the Vitality Arts Project for Art Museums funded by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy, Art Thrives is NOMA’s Creative Aging initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. The program offers annual multi-session arts workshops inspired both by the museum’s permanent collection as well as its mission to promote lifelong learning.
