Class is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Enter at the main entrance gate to the Sculpture Garden on Dueling Oaks Drive. Please bring your own mat and a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. , Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies, naming oneself, mythological origin stories, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. This workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, as the content will build on creating a comprehensive piece. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist, artist advocate, teaching artist, and tutor in and around New Orleans. LaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history, the Divine Feminine, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest, joy, resistance, and abundance. About Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMAIn 2022, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. Beau Romeo hosts a springtime journaling workshop series at NOMA. In this beginner-friendly course, participants will be guided in journaling with their preferred medium through each session’s focus—Observing, Illustrating, Inquiry, and Embodiment—letting their creativity support them in this exploration. Through each session, participants will tune into the seasonal plant life of NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden. These exercises in curiosity, observation, and recording can be applied to one’s own home and the natural world around us in New Orleans and beyond. This workshop series will be hosted on March 22, April 12, May 10, and May 17. Each date in this series is a unique, stand alone class, so you can attend just one or all four to build on your skills. Workshop registration is $25 for NOMA members and $30 for General Admission (materials not included). Advance registration is required to receive relevant prep materials. In the case of inclement weather, sessions will be rescheduled. Purchase Materials About the Sessions and Required MaterialsClass 1 – Observation: Participants will orient themselves to the plants and landscape of the sculpture garden. There we will develop and explore the practice of having a sit spot. Tapping into our sensory awareness, we start to build the internal framework that guides how we choose to record the worlds around us. We will learn basic introductory botany so as to more deeply familiarize ourselves with what we are recording. Class 2 – Illustration: Participants will develop a language of illustration and/or visual representation (watercoloring, markers, pencils, etc.) for their journals. They will learn the basics of drawing from life, botanical illustration, and more importantly be encouraged to find the path of least resistance in order to gain confidence in the pursuit. All skill levels encouraged and all mediums,  demonstrations will be in watercolors. Class 3 – Inquiry: Now that some participants have spent some time in the garden, we are seeing seasonal shifts take place. As new cycles of life emerge before us, we fine tune our natural curiosities into scientific inquiries of our garden observations. We build a practice of story telling to convey what we are seeing, feeling, observing over a period of time. Class 4 – Embodiment: Drawing from the skills we’ve learned in previous classes, (and introducing them for our first time students) – we will incorporate our new practices. What is it to be embodied and present in a place, how do we use a journal to capture this? Participants will become cartographers as they make a map that is relevant to their journalistic practice throughout the series. Material requirements: Journaling should be affordable and accessible. If you already have a journal that’s been languishing in your closet for years or colored pencils getting dusty in the bottom of a drawer, by all means bring them to share with your fellow students for the duration of the class. Markers, materials for collage, whatever gets you excited. The only requirement is to bring a journal (or spare paper), pencil, and eraser. The NOMA Museum Shop will have supplies available for purchase with a discount for registered attendees. Registrants will receive an email with suggested materials and where to purchase them as well as readings ahead of the class date. Each session in this four part Embodied Magic of Nature Journaling series can be a stand alone class, but participation in all four is encouraged to get the most out of this journaling practice and observe the change of the seasons. This is an outdoor class, so dress appropriately to spend the full class time outdoors. In August, just in time for back to school season, our Teen Book Club selection will be a book that is included on the Louisiana English Language Arts required reading list. About Marc Klein Marc Klein is a screenwriter, director, producer, and author whose tales of love and loss have charmed audiences worldwide. In 1997, Klein sold his first screenplay, Love, Jenny, a supernatural love story, to Universal Studios as a vehicle for Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett, allowing him to leave his assistant job and write full-time. In 2000, Klein wrote the original screenplay Serendipity, which sparked a bidding war among Hollywood’s top studios. Ultimately produced by Miramax Films, and starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, the tale of star-crossed lovers was declared “an instant romantic comedy classic” and was a smash hit at the box office, grossing nearly $100 million in the United States alone. In his review of the film, legendary movie critic Gene Shalit wrote: “I’ve been reviewing movies for 35 years and Serendipity joins my personal list of matchless romantic comedies. About Meryl PosterMeryl Poster is a multi-award-winning producer, media executive and industry leader with a distinguished career spanning film, television and digital media. She began as one of the first female trainees in the famed William Morris mailroom and went on to become a driving force in entertainment. Today, she is the founder and president of Superb Entertainment, a production company developing a diverse slate of scripted and unscripted content across major networks and platforms. She oversaw and produced Million Dollar Shoppers for Lifetime Rodeo Girls for A&E and Welcome to Myrtle Manor, which ran for three seasons onTLC. Mob Wives was developed and launched under Poster’s guidance. which also included Mob Wives Chicago and Big Ang’s House. In the digital space, Poster created and produced the Ambie award-nominated podcast, ”Call Your Grandmother,” which ran for two seasons on iHeart, and the 2023 series, “She Wants More.” A dedicated advocate for education and mentorship, Poster is an Advisory Council Member at Brooklyn College’s Feirstein School and an Adjunct Professor at Tulane University. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and a board member of the Creative Coalition. She also supports Dress for Success, an organization dedicated to empowering women in the workplace. NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. This month’s book club selection is Beyond Blue and White: The Hidden History of Delftware and the Women Behind the Iconic Ceramic, an absorbing work of cultural history by Genevieve Wheeler Brown that reveals the stories behind one of the world’s most coveted and beloved ceramic. Pierpont Morgan and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt II who came together with fellow New York women and laid the groundwork for women in the museum world while preserving decorative arts with an educational mission. Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. , Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies, naming oneself, mythological origin stories, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. This workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, as the content will build on creating a comprehensive piece. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist, artist advocate, teaching artist, and tutor in and around New Orleans. LaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history, the Divine Feminine, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest, joy, resistance, and abundance. Classes take place every Saturday morning and (beginning in late February 2026) every Wednesday evening. The instructor for this class is Claiborne Davis. Class is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Enter at the main entrance gate to the Sculpture Garden on Dueling Oaks Drive. Please bring your own mat and a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. Join us at the museum on select Saturday mornings for Studio KIDS! youth art-making workshops. In this workshop series designed for artists ages 6-12, we’ll take inspiration from works on view across the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden and make our own creations with a teaching artist. About Studio KIDS!: Make Your Own SketchbookIn this workshop, young artists will learn basic bookbinding techniques and create their own sketchbook just in time for summer vacation. This Studio KIDS! session will be led by teaching artist Krystyna. Registration is $25 for members and $30 for other participants. Advance registration is required and includes the price of all art-making materials. Register Now Studio KIDS! participants receive a 10% discount on purchases made at the NOMA Museum Shop.
