Don’t let your lack of studio equipment be an obstacle! Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rate is $20 for this 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. First, a big thank-you to all the members who joined us for the co-op cleanup two weekends ago! Your hard work truly made a difference; the space is looking beautiful and ready for a busy season of community events, starting with… Our Annual Plant Swap!  Join us on Sunday, May 18, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM for a free community plant swap.  Whether you’re a longtime gardener or just getting started, the swap is a fun way to share your extra veggies, herbs, perennials, or even houseplants and grow your plant collection. Not only that, it’s a great way to connect with fellow plant lovers. Here’s how it works: you bring a plant and you can take a plant home! Plants commonly seen at the swap: Iris, agastache, feverfew, echinacea, violets, day lilies, monarda, hosta, and many vegetable seedlings and herbs.  Kindly note: We ask that participants do not bring invasive species or plants that spread aggressively by runner roots. Some examples to avoid include mint, bishop’s weed/ground elder, and creeping bellflower. These plants are known to be problematic in Maine gardens. We have moved our community open studio to a fully accessible space, thanks to our partners, Waldo County YMCA! For two hours a week, adults of all abilities and skill level are warmly welcomed to this diner-inspired gathering place for creative exploration. Visit the “buffet” of art supplies and see what speaks to you. Peruse the “menu” of inspiration if you have no idea where to start! Try your hand at the “weekly special” – a low-pressure project led by your hostess. The atmosphere is relaxing and social, with coffee and tea available. Visitors are welcomed to play and explore, or to rekindle an old creative spark and learn new skills. Studies have shown that engaging in art activity lowers blood pressure, increases mood, staves off dementia, builds social connections, and increases immune response.  This program really is for anyone and everyone who would like to reap those benefits in a relaxed, low-commitment setting. Admission is free. A donation jar is at the door and any contributions are appreciated. No membership for the YMCA is necessary, just check in at the front desk! About your hostess: Bridget Matros has been an educator for twenty years, in settings ranging from preschools for homeless children to community centers for seniors with dementia. A published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood, Bridget has conducted trainings and created resources for teachers and parents, empowering them to raise critically thinking problem-solvers. She taught art and music in a Montessori school for four years before coming to Waterfall Arts full time as the the Kids & Families Programs Manager. Here she runs camps, family workshops, afterschool programs, and public events. Ms. Matros is also a trained member of Maine Arts’ Commission’s “Creative Aging” teaching artist roster. With a degree in Social Psychology from Oberlin College, her focus with all audiences is to customize experiences to activate the therapeutic and developmental powers of art. Gardeners ready to refresh their landscapes will find more than 1,000 plants to choose from at the Belfast Garden Club’s annual plant sale Memorial Day Weekend.   The highly anticipated yearly event is Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to noon at Steamboat Landing and the Belfast Boathouse, 34 Commercial St. Shoppers will find everything they need to brighten up their garden beds: perennials, annuals, herbs, shrubs, and pollinating natives.    The garden club’s annual plant sale is one of its most important fundraisers. Proceeds support school programs, camp scholarships, library donations, and Belfast’s public gardens.   Founded in 1928, the Belfast Garden Club promotes the knowledge and love of gardening, the protection of native flora and fauna, and the beauty of Belfast’s public places.  For more information, visit belfastgardenclub.org.

Paste papering is like adult finger painting. It is a wet, seemingly sloppy, but intentional method of decorating paper. It is better to be quick with the paper than perfect, and always be open to ‘happy mistakes’. Once one is practiced at paste papering, repetition creates a dance of choreographed steps and techniques, culminating in your unique designs. In this class we will learn how to use different types of pigments combined with wheat paste to decorate papers that can then be used to make books, cards, and a variety of other paper artworks. Included in this process are various scraping tools to create multiple textures. Tools & materials provided. This is a great class to pair with Sculpted Paper Flowers on May 31. About the instructor: Joelle Webber, our guest instructor for this class, has spent 40 years collecting book arts techniques in college & workshop settings. She now designs classes for many different communities of makers based on her experience in writing, paper decorating, collage, calligraphy, pop-up, paper sculpting, book binding and box making.
