The Curtis Memorial Library Creative Hive is a do-it-yourself opportunity for patrons to use special equipment to convert personal documents, photographs, slides, film negatives, and VHS to digital files. Come to this introduction class to learn about the equipment and how to use it! Once you have attended this class, you can sign up for a time to use the equipment and start digitizing your memories. The Creative Hive will have open times to register for library patrons to use this equipment. Only Curtis Memorial Library card holders can use this equipment. Patrons do need to have attended our Introduction class or watched our tutorial video of the equipment prior to booking time in the room.

Join us for a hands-on workshop led by Pat Harpell that explores the science and sustainability behind everyday hygiene and beauty products. Participants will discover how chemistry and natural ingredients come together to create effective, eco-friendly alternatives to commercial items while learning about emulsification, pH balance, and preservation in simple formulations. Through guided demonstrations and practical activities, everyone will gain the confidence to craft their own natural personal care products at home. All participants will leave with recipes for toothpowder and hair powder, as well as samples of lotion, face wash, and clay masks, building both knowledge and self-reliant skills for healthier, more sustainable living. Attendance is capped at 30. Prior to returning to Maine in 2019, Pat Harpell founded the South Carolina Herbal Society in 2009, running programs to educate the general public on sustainable, Earth-focused health topics. She collaborated with the Medical University of SC to introduce the history of modern medicine’s roots and to partake in an on-campus herbal garden. She eventually introduced the first Herbal Apprenticeship program to Charleston, SC graduating herbalists who continue to work within their communities.  Prior to that, Pat founded two Yoga Teacher Training Schools with a dedication to underserved populations, which she ran for 10 years. Join us for a Winter Garden Workshop with Eva Butler from The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) focusing on the restoration of a historic tree species and increasing the edible nature of our forests. TACF has been working to bring the American chestnut back to the forests and people of Maine. Eva will share about a new initiative Chestnuts Across Maine (CAM) that partners with land trusts, state parks, schools and town squares in Maine to establish small plantings of American chestnuts on lands open to the public. During the first two years of the program TACF volunteers and partners established 20 new plantings of American chestnuts. Beyond bringing chestnuts back to Maine’s communities, TACF-ME is building the human infrastructure to restore the American chestnut one community at a time. This is a public event – parts of the event may be recorded and photographed.This event is part of our annual Winter Garden Workshop Series: Growing Literacy! Every year, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, in collaboration with Growing to Give and Curtis Memorial Library, offers this event series to offer skill-building workshops and learning opportunities for gardeners of all abilities. About the Speaker: Eva Butler is an ecologist, environmental educator and community organizer. In her retirement, she serves as vice-president and volunteer coordinator for the Maine Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation (TACF), a national organization. TACF was established 42 years ago with a mission to return the iconic American chestnut to its native range from Georgia to Maine. Eva’s work involves coordinating programs to reintroduce people to this iconic tree and solicit their help in restoring it to Maine, one community at a time.

Participants will learn the basics of setting up the machine, navigating Cricut Design Space software, and creating simple projects such as stickers, greeting cards, or labels. This beginner-friendly workshop will provide step-by-step instruction, tips for choosing materials, and time for participants to use the machine and explore. If an effort to reduce waste and to learn new skills the library is offering a Repair Cafe!If you haven’t heard of a repair café before it’s a global movement that started in Europe but has grown into a global organization with the goal of reducing waste as well as educating people on how to repair the items that break everyday rather then throw them away. It's a great way of connecting members of the community that are familiar with repairs and those that aren't but are excited to learn! On Saturday February 14th from 10 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Bath will host a group of volunteers who will work with patrons to repair their items, this is an excellent opportunity to learn how to repair common items rather then have to replace them. We will have experts able to repair electronics, lamps, mend clothing, small appliances, sharpen tools, wooden furniture and Jewelry. If we are unable to repair your item we will make suggestions on were you can find the parts and learn how to do the repair or have it professionally repaired. This is a first come, first served program and depending on the turnout we can't guarantee we will be able to help every one or repair every item.Our goal is to help our community learn how simple many repairs can be and that their are local experts within our community willing to help. If you have any questions or if there is something you would like repaired but don't know if we can help at the repair cafe please call the library at 725-5242 ext 4.
