He will be discussing her latest book, "New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit" - a book that will captivate readers and provide historical context for today’s clashes between public interests and powerful business and political groups. Algeo tells this amazing true story in full for the first time, and although it took place more than a century ago, it will at times sound surprisingly familiar. About New York’s Secret Subway: In the nineteenth century, Manhattan’s streets were so choked with pedestrians, horses, vehicles, and vendors that a trip from City Hall to Central Park could take hours. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious “Boss” of Tammany Hall. New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nation’s first operational subway. New York seemed destined to become the second city in the world with a comprehensive subway system, after London. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. About Matt: Matthew Algeo writes about interesting stuff. Or, as his mom liked to say, Matthew is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit.​ He is the author of seven other books, including Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip, which the Washington Post named one of the best books of 2009. In addition to reporting and writing, Matthew has held jobs as a convenience store clerk, a Halloween costume salesman, and a hot dog vendor in a traveling circus. His current gig is hosting Morning Edition on Kansas Public Radio. Matthew holds a degree in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. His wife, Allyson, is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. They have lived in Bamako, Rome, Ulan Bator, Maputo, Sarajevo, and Gaborone. They now live in Lawrence, Kansas, with their daughter Zaya. Kripalu Yoga for the Seasons: Spring Thaw Slow Flow During this seasonal shift, melt away winter by practicing yoga with us! During this session, we’ll move in ways that incorporate the entire body, helping you to alleviate congestion and sluggishness that often occur as the weather turns from cold and dry to warm and moist. Along with the postures, there are breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation techniques to bring in qualities of lightness and alertness; clearing out more of the mental and physical clutter left behind by the dark winter months. Classes are 75 minutes long and students new to yoga are welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing, bring your own yoga mat, 2 blocks, a yoga strap, a bolster, and a yoga blanket.*  The instructor, Carol, is a long time yoga practitioner and a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher. Join us for a special conversation between award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver as they chat about Walter’s book Rehab: An American Scandal. In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry. Today, more people have access to treatment than ever before. So why isn’t it working? The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients. In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. Wendy is a mother from a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, whose son died in a sober living home. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. Larry is a surgeon who himself struggled with addiction, and would eventually become one of the first Suboxone prescribers in the nation, drawing the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration. About the Author: Shoshana Walter is a reporter for the Marshall Project covering the criminal justice system. Her reporting has been honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and Selden Ring, and she has won the Knight Award for Public Service, the Edward R. Murrow Award, and the Livingston Award for Young Journalists. She started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers, and on NPR stations across the country. She is based in Oakland, California. About the Guest Host: Barbara Ellen Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her widely known works include The Poisonwood Bible, the tale of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's attempts to eat locally. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel Demon Copperhead. Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans and their communities and environments. March is Judicial Outreach Month, which aims to strengthen public understanding of the court system across the Commonwealth. Throughout the month, judges and other judicial volunteers meet with community groups of all ages to discuss how courts work, highlight the role of an impartial and independent judiciary, build relationships with local communities, and answer questions.  Join us for a Q & A with the Hon. Maureen Walsh, Associate Justice, Appeals Court. Justice Walsh will answer your questions about the role of the Appeals Court, the process to becoming a judge, or anything else you want to ask! About Justice Walsh: Born in Boston and raised in Needham, Justice Walsh graduated from the University of Massachusetts and the Western New England University College School of Law, cum laude, and was a Note Editor of the Law Review. She began her career as a law clerk for U. S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor in 1991. She then went on to become an assistant district attorney for the Northwestern district attorney’s office from 1994 through 1998. She was appointed to the Parole Board in 1998, eventually serving as chairwoman until she was appointed as an associate justice of the Eastern Hampshire District Court in 2008 by then-Gov. Deval Patrick. Justice Walsh has served as the presiding justice of the Holyoke District Court and most recently served as the presiding justice of the Northampton District Court, as well as the Regional Administrative Justice for Region 6 of the District Court, which encompasses all four western Massachusetts counties. Justice Walsh was appointed to the Appeals Court by Governor Charlie Baker in 2021. As we learned, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of which have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising, Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women—known as “the girls” by the leadership of the resistance and “bandits” by their Nazi oppressors—who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers. This time, we'll take a deeper dive into our women heroes - what was their motivation, how did they succeed in their endeavors, what was the impact of their work? About the book: Zivia Lubetkin, the most senior female member of the Jewish Fighting Organization Command Staff in Warsaw and a reluctant legend in her own time, who was immortalized by her code name, "Celina". Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprising. Dr. Idina “Inka” Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercy. Tema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Tossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside world. Interspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardship—inspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. About Elizabeth: The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, I earned dual master’s degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and have written the history blog, “HISTORICITY (was already taken,” since 2011. I live in New Paltz, New York. My first book, a work of narrative non-fiction titled The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising will be released by Harper Perennial in Fall, 2025. Kripalu Yoga for the Seasons: Spring Thaw Slow Flow During this seasonal shift, melt away winter by practicing yoga with us! During this session, we’ll move in ways that incorporate the entire body, helping you to alleviate congestion and sluggishness that often occur as the weather turns from cold and dry to warm and moist. Along with the postures, there are breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation techniques to bring in qualities of lightness and alertness; clearing out more of the mental and physical clutter left behind by the dark winter months. Classes are 75 minutes long and students new to yoga are welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing, bring your own yoga mat, 2 blocks, a yoga strap, a bolster, and a yoga blanket.*  The instructor, Carol, is a long time yoga practitioner and a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher. She previously served on the Board of Directors for the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). Ryan is an award-winning professor at Rutgers University and a guest faculty mentor in the Creative Writing MFA program at Western Connecticut State University. Before entering academia, she co-founded Radiant Advisors, a business intelligence research firm, where she led data strategy initiatives for clients including 21st Century Fox Films, Warner Bros., and Disney. Retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Dennis Curran will discuss the behind-the-scenes process by which judges make their decisions: how bail is set, how sentencing decisions are made, how a criminal trial works, what juries really think, whether Massachusetts juries are “giving away the store,” how judges are selected, the difference between appointed versus elected judges, how jurors are chosen, specialty courts (such as drug and gun courts), and the challenges of being fair, and yet also adhering to the law. Dennis J. Curran served as a Massachusetts judge for 16 years, including in the Superior Court from 2006 to 2018. Prior to his time on the bench, Curran worked as an Assistant District Attorney and First Assistant Legal Counsel to the Governor, in addition to work in private practice. A graduate of Boston Latin School, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia School of Law, Curran has taught law at Tufts University, Roger Williams University School of Law, and Brown University.
