​“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” is an old proverb that is probably never truer than in the field of popular music. Songs such as the Beatles’ “Yesterday,” Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now,” and the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows" all have been recorded dozens of times by a variety of artists after the release of the original version. In this presentation, viewers will be able to contrast prominent covers of songs from the Great American Songbook with the original versions and examine how changes in tempo and arrangement may, in some cases, have even made it better. Led by Rich Knox, a retired school teacher and administrator, who lectures on musicals, films, and opera to libraries across the country.  Click here to register. Many people think "fake news" is a recent phenomenon, but we can trace it back to the 1920s, when radio was new, and society was much more trusting. Back then, there were fake "doctors" peddling cures for diseases, and fake "scientists" with machines that let you talk to aliens. And when TV became popular in the 1950s, the fraudsters just moved over to the new mass medium and came up with new schemes. So, what lessons can we learn from their tactics? And would they still be successful today? Media historian Donna Halper will take you on a journey through radio and TV's formative years, as you meet some of the fraudsters and charlatans who tried to deceive the public. Donna Halper is a media historian, professor, author, and public speaker.
