Experience a solo exhibition of works by North Shore Arts member Sandra Kavanaugh, on display from May 27 – June 15. Sandra works almost exclusively in pastel and exhibits her work throughout New England including the North Shore and Cape Cod in Massachusetts. She was awarded Master Circle status with IAPS, the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2023. She is a member of the Copley Society in Boston and was elected to associate status with the Pastel Society of America. Sandra is also a signature member of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and is a Master member of the Newburyport Art Association. Her evocative, delicately rendered pastel paintings perfectly depict the beauty of the New England coast.

Caleb Stone, a Cape Ann-based painter and member of the North Shore Arts Association, studied at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. Working in both watercolor and oil, he draws inspiration from French and American Impressionists and was introduced to plein air painting by his father, Don Stone N.A., in the Rockport art colony. A recipient of numerous awards, including the John Stobart Fellowship and the Land and Light Gold Medal, Caleb teaches workshops regularly and was recently named an Elected Artist at the Lyme Art Association. Join Caleb Stone for a dynamic plein air painting workshop focused on capturing light and atmosphere using a limited palette of red, yellow, and blue. Each day includes a location demo, personalized instruction, and a group critique, with Caleb alternating between oil and watercolor demonstrations. Class meets daily at 9:30am at the NSAA and runs from 10am to 4pm; students should bring lunch, water, and full painting gear.

Art in the Barn, Essex County Greenbelt’s annual celebration of regional art and land conservation, returns June 13 and 14. Now in its third decade, the North Shore tradition features a juried selection of works by over 130 artists. More than 1,000 pieces — ranging from paintings and photography to sculpture, stained glass, ceramics, and more — will be showcased against the scenic backdrop of a New England salt marsh. Art in the Barn celebrates artistic talent while also supporting Greenbelt’s conservation mission to protect natural landscapes and working farms across Essex County. Artists contribute 50% or more of their proceeds to Greenbelt’s conservation work. This event takes place on Cox Reservation in Essex, a 31-acre property with open fields and trails on the edge of the Great Marsh and the Essex River.  Art in the Barn hours Friday, June 13, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Opening Reception: 5 – 8:30 p.m. The event officially opens at 10 a.m., but in the evening, a reception and artists mixer will be held featuring live music by The Splinters, along with delicious food, desserts, and drinks from local favorites Butter UR Biscuit, The Cravery, and True North Ale Company. As a seaport town jutting into the Atlantic, Gloucester was of strategic importance during the American Revolution and always under threat of attack. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet  people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty, as patriots, privateers, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. For 55 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. “We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968, and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.  East Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums chart, and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968. 50 years later, in 2018, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit has been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence, but the release of 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater couldn’t have arrived at a better time. The band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations, traveling the world, enjoying hit singles on their own and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, and countless others. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.  The future of Tower of Power is set out to be vigorous and dynamic, and will prove to be just that for fans around the world starved for the band’s groove just the way Tower of Power likes it!

Learn techniques to capture a scene in paint with a good sketch. A paint-sketch is different from a "painting" in its immediacy, freshness, and speed. We will cover methods of simplification, color choices, paint application, and capturing the feeling of an entire scene with loose precision. We will work in a Cape Ann alleyway and do some exercises from photos in the studio. The workshop includes a demo, and a final critique with discussion at the end of the day. Participants may paint in acrylic or oil. Emily will provide the reference photos. All skill levels are welcome. Space is limited.

LITERARY GLOUCESTER, A WALKING TOUR, began as a project of the Gloucester 400th+ in 2023, and it proved so popular it was picked up by the Gloucester Writers Center in 2024 to keep it going. Now approaching its third year, Phil Storey continues to add rich details to the walks, to be held every second and fourth Saturday morning from May through September 2025, culminating in a Sails & Trails tour on the 27th. Gloucester is known as an endless source of fish tales, but it is also home to a vast literary landscape. T.S. Eliot, often regarded as the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, summered in Gloucester throughout his childhood. He bought a composition notebook at Proctor Brothers downtown, in which he wrote his early poems, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft set a number of his weird tales in Gloucester such as ?The Shadow Over Innsmouth? featuring the American Legion building on the tour. One of the best-selling American author of the 19th century, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, summered in Gloucester most of her life. Sadly, she is largely forgotten now, as women artists so often are, but in her time she was so popular she attracted other creatives to the area, including Longfellow, whom she brought to Norman?s Woe, a rocky outcropping which inspired ?The Wreck of the Hesperus.? Judith Sargent Murray, Kipling, Charles Olson, and many others are ready to be re-discovered on a free two-hour walking tour of Gloucester with noted raconteur Phil Storey. Philip Storey is a preeminent historian of the local. A noted raconteur and story-teller, he developed this engaging tour over the course of the Gloucester 400+ and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.

The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet  people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty, as patriots, privateers, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. Sam, Peter, & Band will be bringing the music of Jerry Garcia's supergroup's album Old & In The Way to the stage! The music that Sam Grisman heard his father David Grisman and Jerry Garcia make in the early ’90s in the house Sam grew up in (the simply titled “Jerry Garcia & David Grisman,” as just one example) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded, it also triggers his oldest and fondest musical memories. Sam is inspired by how much camaraderie, love, and joy is simply oozing out of his father and his best friend, but also how deeply they get underneath their favorite songs (originals, covers, and traditional/old-time tunes) and how expertly that material was curated. Sam’s aim in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a container where he and his friends can showcase their genuine love and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry’s music, the impact it has made on their own individual musical voices, and also to showcase the original music that their squad has to offer the world. Join the Cape Ann Museum at Gloucester City Hall to celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Flag raising with comments from city officials and CAM staff outside City Hall.  9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Community reading of Frederick Douglass’s What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Following the reading, educator, Project Scholar for the Freeman Family Project, and Gloucester Juneteenth founder Toni Waldron will lead breakout groups for community members to discuss the speech and their experience reading it. Kyrouz Auditorium, Gloucester City Hall  10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interactive program in the City Hall parking lot guided by Toni Waldron on the history of the Freeman family, a prominent Black family living in Gloucester in the 18th and 19th centuries. A table organized and staffed by the Bookstore of Gloucester and Dogtown Books will distribute books that center diverse voices, including those written by BIPOC authors, to visitors thanks to the generosity of Action, Inc. Red Coat and White Ribbon: The British Are Coming!   The Red coat in CAM’s collection is the only surviving example of a British enlisted man’s uniform of this era and was captured during the War of 1812. Join us for a deep dive to learn about the coat and the Gloucester families behind the story.   Join us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. The Isidore Quartet, recipient of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and winner of the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition, joins forces with saxophonist Steven Banks, a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner. Their program features Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12, Op. 127 and Banks’s own Quintet for Saxophone and String Quartet. Bringing the Past to Life 250 Years Later The 250th Anniversary Reenactment of The Battle of Bunker Hills aims to accurately portray the events and faithfully represent the people involved in the conflict of June 17, 1775. Our mission is to celebrate and commemorate the actions and sacrifices of the men and women of all sides of the Battle of Bunker Hill through careful research, public demonstrations, civic engagement and educational outreach. Through these means, we endeavor to increase understanding of the Battle of Bunker Hill, and to bring to life the stories and voices of those long gone or purposefully excluded: when you see us, think of them. The first pitched battle of the American War for Independence was fought in stages. Our reenactment of the battle will do the same. The recreated battle will be broken up into a series of vignettes and lectures, as well as the tactical demonstrations. Beginning each morning, Colonial forces will race to build fortifications atop the hill as the Royal Navy bombards the American position to soften its defense in preparation for amphibious assault. British soldiers will then be ferried to the beachhead before charging the American lines – attacking the hill three times before taking it through bitter combat. Before and after the tactical demonstrations, interpreters portraying specific historical figures will give context to the events of June 1775, detailing how the battle transformed their lives and our nation.
