Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Andrew Lam discusses the fourteen pieces in Stories from the Edge of the Sea, exploring love and loss, lust and grief, longing and heartbreaks through the lives of Vietnamese immigrants and their children in California.  At times humorous and ecstatic, other times poetic and elegiac, the fourteen pieces in Stories from the Edge of the Sea explore love and loss, lust and grief, longing and heartbreaks through the lives of Vietnamese immigrants and their children in California. A younger dancer is haunted by memories of almost dying on a boat when they escaped from Vietnam, a widow processes her husband’s death through frantic Facebook postings, a writer enters an old lover’s home and sees a ghost at twilight. If the human heart is a vast, open-ended terrain, then Andrew Lam’s short stories are its mountains, valleys, and lakes. Together they seek to chart a barely explored country. “Andrew Lam’s Stories from The Edge of the Sea beautifully offers tales of longing, repression, and love as he recalls experiences of immigration and confronts the ruptures amidst generational memories. These stories are indelible, profound, and unforgettable.” —Lynn Novick, codirector of The Vietnam War  About Andrew: Andrew Lam was born Lâm Quang Dũng in 1964 in South Vietnam. He was the son of General Lâm Quang Thi of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Lam left Vietnam with his family during the fall of Saigon in April 1975. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in biochemistry. He soon abandoned plans for medical school and entered a creative writing program at San Francisco State University.  He is a journalist and short story writer. In 2005, he published a collection of essays, Perfume Dreams, about the problem of identity as a Vietnamese living in the U.S. He is a regular contributor to National Public Radio's All Things Considered. His second book, East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres is a meditation on east–west relations, and how Asian immigration changed the West. Birds of Paradise Lost, his third book, is a collection of short stories about Vietnamese newcomers struggling to remake their lives in the San Francisco Bay after a long, painful exodus from Vietnam. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Dennis Curran is excited to continue his "Great American Unsung Heroes Who Changed The Course Of History" series. This month, learn about Virginia Hall and her immense personal courage and determination. Discover how she broke through the barriers of physical limitation and gender discrimination to become America’s greatest spy of World War II. She went by the name of Marie. Or Brigitte. Or Diane. Or any of a half dozen other names. Some saw her as a middle-aged newspaper reporter. To others, she was a doddering old woman. To the Nazis, she was an elusive enemy, “The Lady Who Limps.” Her real name was Virginia Hall. She had a wooden leg. And she was a spy. As the Allies’ first agent to live behind the lines in Vichy France, she organized resistance groups, helped conduct sabotage operations, and reported secret intelligence back to the Allies. Hall was one of the first women agents in the CIA and was the only civilian woman of the war to receive the Distinguished Service Cross. Dennis J. Curran served as a Massachusetts judge for 16 years, including in the Superior Court from 2006 to 2018. Prior to his time on the bench, Curran worked as an Assistant District Attorney and First Assistant Legal Counsel to the Governor, in addition to work in private practice. A graduate of Boston Latin School, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia School of Law, Curran has taught law at Tufts University, Roger Williams University School of Law, and Brown University. This reading group is dedicated to people who love reading and speak Spanish. Los Literários is a small group that meets online every second Friday of the month to talk about whatever people are already reading. No assigned reading! The books and articles you read don’t need to be in Spanish. Only the discussion is in Spanish. Classics, mysteries, biographies, children’s books, you name it -- discussion on any genre are welcome. This will be a space to talk about what people have been reading, recite a poem, read a passage of our latest read, recommend our favorite book ever, and hopefully even inspire you to comment on other books based on what you hear. During a meeting, you may choose to stay quiet and enjoy the discussion, or share your thoughts on a book magazine article, an author, a poem you love – anything, really. This group is inspired by “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” a historic novel by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer based on the German invasion of Guernsey during World War II. The book describes a group of islanders who, starved and abused by the Nazis, found solace in a literary group where everyone picked whatever book was available and talked about it at the next meeting. These were people with varied levels of education who felt empowered by being together and around books. They found in books and in each other the strength to endure hardship. The bravest also found in their little society the courage to speak up, choose love over prejudice and fight for what they believed. Facilitated by Groton's own Daniela Caride! World renown baker, author, and artisan chef Barry Merry is finally retiring after over 40 years and 40 bakeries, opened up in 40 countries, and he’s giving one lucky person the chance of a lifetime. The keys to this multi-million-pound business. Do you know what that means? It’s time for a Bake Down! A televised competition where the best bakers from around the world bake off against each other in weekly challenges that test their creative kitchen skills. Each week, they earn points for their bakes and, at the end of the competition, the baker with the most points wins the coveted golden key and will gain access to the entire Barry Merry bakery franchise. We are in the final weeks, and Lennon Drizzle is the front runner with the most points, closely followed by Ed Velvet. One more challenge will crown the winner who will inherit the company. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** From prehistoric times, through the Stone Age, the Egyptian beekeepers, and into the 21st century, both bees and honey they magically produce have fascinated us for centuries. Come see what it takes to be a beekeeper, the equipment you’ll need to set up your first hive, adding bees to your hive, understanding all the work the bees do inside and outside the hive, and honey extraction. Also learn the important role the honeybees play in pollinating about a third of the fruits and vegetables we eat every day! About John Hedly: John has been a beekeeper for 16 years. He graduated from the Worcester County Beekeepers Association (WCBA) bee school in 2009. He presented a two-night Introduction to Beekeeping class at the Assabet After Dark and Bay Path programs for the past four years. John has presented the Introduction to Beekeeping class to many libraries in the local area for people of all ages, some of which led people to attend our bee school and becoming beekeepers themselves. John has served as a mentor to several new beekeepers in the past and is currently mentoring two beekeepers in Auburn and one in Charlton. He is the former librarian for the Worcester County Beekeepers Association as well as a two-term member of the WCBA Board of Directors.
