We will be kicking off our "Level Up at the Library"  Summer Reading Program with an afternoon of fun and games. One Up Games will set up a video game room in Sibley Hall and LED Mini-Golf on the third floor. Have you wanted to play Dungeons & Dragons but never gotten around to do it? Or have you played before and wanted to again, but no one wants to be the Dungeon Master? Luckily,  we have a D&D game just for you!  Dungeons & Dragons is a collaborative role-playing story telling game.  If you already have a character sheet or dice you can bring those if you like, but are not necessary.   This is a small group who meet every Tuesday afternoon from 4-6 for 8 weeks during the summer.   Participants who sign up for the series are expected  to attend every week if possible. This group reads a wide variety of material, including recent works of fiction, classics, and nonfiction that are selected by the group each June. One member of the group facilitates each month's discussion, allowing for conversations that vary with each meeting. The group generally meets the fourth Tuesday of the month, from 7:00 - 8:30pm in Sibley Hall. It does not usually meet in July or August. The last meeting of the year (June) usually includes a potluck dinner. June 24- Potluck & Choose Next Year's Books  June's meeting is our last before taking a summer break! Bring your favorite dish to share with the group. We will not be discussing a book this month but will be choosing what to read next year! **PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** We have reached a critical time as Supreme Court cases and some state laws have eroded civil and voting rights protections along with a resurgence of white supremacist activities across the country. This has contributed to increased discontent and polarization with no clear resolution and these challenges weaken the bonds of our communities. Unfortunately, racism and the struggle for civil rights and equity is not new to the American experience and to help us understand the historical context on where we find ourselves as a society, Dr. David Kalivas will offer an analysis of the history of racism and civil rights in the United States. About David: David M. Kalivas, Ph.D., currently serves as Senior Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Prior to retirement, he was a full-time professor of history at Middlesex Community College for nearly 40 years and for the last thirteen years of his career at the college he served as founding director of the Commonwealth Honors Program. His teaching and research interests cover a broad range of topics in world history with specialties in the history of racism, religion, and cross-cultural interactions. David has a Ph.D. from Northeastern University, a Master's from the University of Connecticut, and Bachelor's Degree from Suffolk University. RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Keith Haring's vibrant and iconic art captured the spirit of 1980s New York City, blending pop art, graffiti, and social activism. What made his bold, energetic figures and symbols so universally appealing? Haring's work, characterized by its simplicity and accessibility, addressed pressing issues including AIDS awareness. From subway stations to museums, Haring's art continues to inspire and provoke thought decades after his untimely death. About Jane: Jane Oneail is a sought-after speaker, educator, and independent art historian. Jane curates and delivers engaging art appreciation programs through her company Culturally Curious, founded in 2017. She holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. Born and raised in New Hampshire, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. Arrive early as parking is at a premium!  Longtime New England singer/songwriter Matt York returns to perform songs and tell stories about the great Willie Nelson! Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** June is Pride Month, which is dedicated to celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) pride. It honors the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, which was a turning point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. What started as an angry mob's violent reaction to a police raid in 1969 ignited the gay rights movement and has over time grown to become a joyous annual celebration. Explore the origins of Pride Month and why is has grown into an annual tradition observed in America and many other countries. Led by entertainment historian John Kenrick, who is the Curator for the Museum of Broadway in New York City and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Amateur Theatricals. RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. Presented in partnership with Tewksbury Public Library.
