**OFFSITE LOCATION** This program will be held at the Community Center, 39 Marrett Rd, Lexington. In his presentation, John will explain the difference between good bees and "bad" bees. He'll share information on where to get bees if you're interested in starting a hive, what tools you need to work a hive, and put an actual hive together in the room. John will explain the different castes within the hive, the stages of bee development, bee chores in and out of the hive, and how to collect honey.  Attendance is on a first-come basis. Registration is suggested to help plan for headcount. John Hedly has been a beekeeper for 16 years. In 2024 he gave more than two dozen presentations at various libraries in the local area for people of all ages. He has won many awards at the Spencer Fair for his honey and was voted Beekeeper of the Year in 2024 by the Worcester County Beekeepers Association (WCBA). **Offsite location** This program will take place at the Community Center, 39 Marrett Rd, Lexington Some of you may remember the Joyce Chen Restaurant, which opened in 1958 on Concord Avenue in Cambridge. At that time the culinary scene in Boston was very different from what it is today. Then, American chow mein and chop suey were considered “Chinese food.” The Joyce Chen Restaurant was the first of its kind to introduce a new kind of Chinese food to Americans – the traditional Chinese cuisine of Eastern and Northern China. Even today, many suburban Chinese restaurants in Greater Boston can trace their roots back to the Joyce Chen Restaurant. Not content with being just a restaurateur, Joyce built her establishment into a Chinese culinary and culture center. She went on to write and self-publish her cookbook, become the first Asian to star in her own Cooking show on public television, produce a PBS special recounting her return to China in 1972, and create and market a line of Asian cookware and cooking sauces. After her death in 1994 she was posthumously inducted into the James Beard Hall of Fame and honored with her own U.S. Postage stamp. In this program, her daughter, Helen Chen, remembers and celebrates her mother’s many accomplishments from Joyce’s early years in war-torn China to her arrival in Cambridge, MA in 1949 and beyond. Through old family photographs, stories and personal memories, Helen recounts her mother’s achievements, and shares the dreams, struggles and hardships of this remarkable woman. Registration is required. About our speaker: Helen Chen was born in Shanghai, China and grew up in Cambridge, MA. She is the author of three cookbooks, and was an adjunct culinary instructor at Boston University Metropolitan College and traveled the U.S. teaching Chinese cuisine. She created and developed her own eponymous line of Asian cooking implements under the brand name, Helen’s Asian Kitchen. She lives with her husband in Lexington, MA. **OFFSITE LOCATION** This program will be presented at the Munroe Art Center, 1403 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington We're celebrating AAPI Heritage month with a fun workshop. Join visible mender, Mariko Sugimori (www.MonaZoeMending.com), to learn about the history of Sashiko, a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan, to reinforce worn fabric and/or repair textiles. We'll work on some Sashiko samplers. All the materials will be provided, but attendees are invited to bring in woven, not stretchy clothing to practice this technique on. This class is recommended for individuals with some hand-sewing experience. Registration is required. Spaces are limited. About our instructor: Mariko, Instagram @Mona_and_Zoe, started her love of fiber arts as a child sewing doll clothes on her mom’s vintage Singer sewing machine and learning to knit at her local yarn store. Her creative visible mending journey is in large part inspired and influenced by her Japanese father’s concept of Mottainai, which roughly translates to “what a waste.” It’s a phrase commonly used to express regret of throwing something away when it still holds value. If so, join our new Cookbook Club and make connections over food! Each month, we will choose a cookbook from which participants will select and prepare a recipe for the group to taste. This month, we will be doing recipes from Mooncakes and Milk Bread: Sweet & Savory Recipes Inspired by Chinese Bakeries by Kristina Cho. Copies of the cookbook will be available at the library to borrow and there is an eBook online. We will reserve a copy at the Circulation Desk for patrons to look through. Registration is required. The Teen Library Leadership Council is open to teens grades 7-12. We meet once a month during the school year (October - June) on Wednesdays from 5-6PM. Occasionally, there will be a need for additional meetings when we are working on a specific project. If you are interested in having a voice in teens' experience of the library and in developing programs to support out entire community, consider joining this group. We welcome new members at any time! Register to have your name added to the our monthly email list. (New members only.  If you have attended meetings last year, you should be on our mailing list. ) NOTE - some of our meetings this year will be virtual and some will be in-person at an offsite location.
