Join us for a presentation by Michael Blanding of his book, The Gospel According to Hobby Lobby: Inside a Billionaire Family’s Quest to Craft a Christian Nation. As Christian nationalism has surged into the mainstream of American politics in the last decade, no family has been more influential than the Greens, owners of the Hobby Lobby chain of big box craft stores. And yet, their story has been largely untold. In his book, Blanding explores how the family’s fervent commitment to “biblical truth” has led it to push the bounds of religious liberty in the Supreme Court, fund conservative institutions responsible for repealing Roe v Wade and undermining LGBTQ rights, and establish the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, controversially stocking it with thousands of illegally trafficked biblical antiquities. In tracing the rise of the family from a small Oklahoma business to a billion-dollar political force, the book looks at how Christian nationalism is funded, organized, and deployed—and the challenge it poses to democracy.Michael Blanding is a Boston-based investigative journalist and author of In Shakespeare’s Shadow and the New York Times bestseller, The Map Thief. A former senior writer at Boston Magazine and senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, his work has appeared in The New York Times, WIRED, Slate, Smithsonian, The Boston Globe, and other publications. Visit his website at www.michaelblanding.com.Registration is encouraged but not required. Book signing will follow. In Fire and Water, flutist Bonnie Cochran and guitarist Fred Springer explore the elemental forces that shape both nature and human experience. Featuring works by Miyagi, Mahoney, McFadden, and Dowland, the program reflects on fire and water as symbols of creation, destruction, renewal, turbulence, and tranquility. Through shifting musical landscapes, the concert invites listeners to consider the powerful currents that flow both around us and within us.Musician Bios:For flutist/composer Bonnie Cochran, performing and composing feed each other and provide a loop of intertwined experience and inspiration—a loop that’s expanded with teaching. She can be heard on the soundtrack for the PBS American Experience episode, Edison, and also appears as the flutist in the HBO miniseries, Olive Kitteridge, and was featured on WCVB’s Chronicle for her community performance work with the Marlborough Cultural District Initiative. As a chamber musician, Bonnie has performed at the Ogunquit Chamber Music Festival, Assumption College, MIT and Harvard University. As a soloist, she has performed at NFA Flute Conventions in Nashville and Salt Lake City, and recently won the NFA Convention Performer Competition. Her compositions have been performed at Gore Place, Brookline Music School, the National Flute Convention and at Carnegie Hall. To cultivate the next generation of music lovers, Bonnie teaches lessons and runs a children’s concert series that incorporates dynamic age-appropriate activities to engage preschool-elementary school aged listeners. www.bonniecochran.comYouTube: @bonniecochranFred Springer is an artist dedicated to sharing music and art with the world through performance, outreach, and education. Having performed on three different continents in countries including Argentina, Canada, Switzerland, and the United States, Fred has developed a compelling way to share his passion for the classical guitar with audiences across different cultures. He has been awarded top prizes in international guitar, ensemble, and mixed instrument competitions. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Austin where he also completed a minor in Art History, and a Master of Music from Columbus State University where he served as a graduate assistant in the Schwob School of Music. Fred now resides in Boston, MA, where he serves as Program Coordinator for Boston Kithara Project, and on the faculty of EKS Music School and the North End Music & Performing Arts Center. He performs often with various chamber ensembles and as a soloist, locally and abroad. In addition, Fred arranges and transcribes music for guitar and has a passion for film and visual art.YouTube: @fspringerguitarThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Marlborough Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. No registration required.
