Halloween at the Museum Program     Fri, Oct 31, 2025 3:00pm - 5:30pm   Location: Lagoda Category:    *Public Events Description Deep Sea Monsters: Halloween Day at the Whaling Museum Friday, October 31, 2025 | 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM For the Deep film screening, advance (free) registration is required.  Dive into a Halloween-themed afternoon at the Whaling Museum, where maritime history meets spooky fun! Discover the stories of "monsters" brought home by sailors throughout history, embark on a scavenger hunt with some not-so-scary spooky whales of our own, and join an undersea quest in the movie Deep. Some of the "monsters" brought home by sailors were based on partial sightings of real animals, and were magnified by fear, imagination, and the perils of whaling life. These included: Kraken – The legendary giant squid, said to drag ships beneath the waves. Modern science confirms colossal squids (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) do exist, with eyes the size of dinner plates. Leviathan – A biblical sea serpent, sometimes described as a monstrous whale. Likely inspired by sperm whales, which can grow over 60 feet long and dive a mile deep. Sea Serpents – Frequently reported in the 18th and 19th centuries, often likely sightings of oarfish, long ribbon-like fish that can exceed 30 feet. Merfolk & Sirens – Rooted in sightings of manatees and dugongs, transformed into eerie tales by sailors’ imaginations. Ghost Whales – Pale, scarred whales that evaded harpoons inspired legends and stories like Mocha Dick, the real-life inspiration for Moby-Dick. These monsters capture both the mystery of the deep ocean and the very real dangers of whaling voyages. This program is free with Museum admission. SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES: 3:00 PM – Monster Hunt & Crafts Begin Make-your-own Kraken tentacles using pipe cleaners and paper crafts Embark on our "spooky whale" scavenger hunt, searching for our whales in costume throughout the Museum! Discover real-life "monsters" throughout the Museum exhibits, and step into the footsteps of a nineteenth-century sailor. 3:30 PM – Deep – an Animated Sci-Fi Adventure on Screen | Runtime 92 min, PG) In a deeply flooded, post-apocalyptic future, humanity has evacuated Earth—and marine creatures must fend for themselves. Deep, a curious dumbo octopus and grandson of the wise Kraken, discovers human artifacts that spark reckless curiosity. When his prank traps his colony, Deep teams up with an anglerfish (Evo) and a neurotic shrimp (Alice) to set things right. Their journey leads them through the Titanic, submerged New York City, and perilous encounters—including a dance-off with a yeti crab and a sinister “Ark-3” plot to freeze aquatic life. Thursday, November 6, 2025 Doors: 5:30 PM | Program Starts: 6:00 PM $5 for Members or $10 Non-Members Tickets coming soon The Captain’s Coup: Activist Journalism on the Portuguese Revolution Part Three of the 2025 Portuguese Lusophone-World Lecture Series Illustrated Presentation for The Captains’ Coup Book Event: 2025 Professors Daniela Melo and Timothy Walker will present highlights from their new scholarly edition of Wilfred Burchett’s writing on Portugal’s 1974 “Carnation” Revolution—published in English for the first time by Verso Books (UK). Drawing on Burchett’s original English-language manuscripts discovered in the National Library of Australia, their illustrated talk explores the role of activist journalism in documenting the downfall of Europe’s longest-standing dictatorship and the grassroots mobilization that made it possible. About Wilfred Burchett (1911–1983) Wilfred Burchett was a prolific and controversial Australian foreign correspondent described by some as “one of the most important journalists of the twentieth century.” He gained international prominence for his groundbreaking reporting on the “atomic plague” in Hiroshima following the 1945 U.S. bombing. Burchett’s work on the Portuguese Carnation Revolution includes rare, in-depth interviews with military leaders, political figures, and everyday people—farmers, fishermen, factory workers, and rural women—offering a vivid and inclusive account of the revolution’s impact. His reporting foregrounds popular mobilization over elite narratives, illuminating the emotional and narrative dimensions of political transformation. Presenter Biographies Daniela F. Melo is a political scientist and lecturer in social sciences at Boston University (College of General Studies). Her work is published in such academic journals as Comparative European Politics, Social Movement Studies, and Foreign Policy Analysis. She is co-editor, with Paul Manuel, of After the Carnation Revolution: Social Movements in Portugal Since 25 April 1974 (Liverpool University Press, 2025). Melo held a Fulbright fellowship in Portugal, has served as a consultant to the US State Department regarding domestic politics in Portugal and Spain, and is a frequent contributor of political analysis to various Portuguese media outlets, commenting on US politics and foreign policy. Timothy D. Walker is professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he serves on the executive board of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, and is graduate faculty of the Department of Portuguese. Walker is also an affiliated researcher of the Centro de História d’Aquém e d’Além-Mar (CHAM), Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. From 1994 to 2003, he was a visiting professor at the Universidade Aberta (Open University) in Lisbon. He is the recipient of a Fulbright dissertation fellowship to Portugal, and fellowships from the Portuguese Camões Institute, the Luso-American Development Foundation, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.   Location: Cook Memorial Theater
