The Ames Free Library's Little Free Costume Closet is back to collect and share new or gently used Halloween costumes for infants through kids of all ages for our costume swap! Donated costumes will be made available in our Little Free Costume Closet at Queset House starting on Tuesday, October 14 through Saturday, November 1. If you would still like to contribute to the closet, you can drop off your donation with the Queset House manager on duty.. Queset House (and the Little Free Costume Closet) is open on days that the library is open from 1:00 PM until one hour before the library closes. You are not required to donate in order to take a costume, we simply ask that you only take what you need for this year’s Halloween costume. The Little Free Costume Closet operates on a first-come, first-served basis and we are unable to set things aside for anyone. *We will NOT be accepting old clothes, pajamas, anything dirty or stained, or dance costumes. Janis Robinson Daly will share how and why she came to write historical fiction with the launch of her debut novel, The Unlocked Path, and its sequel, The Path Beneath Her Feet, along with a discussion of the popularity of the historical fiction genre among readers. Event includes readings from her books, a book sale, and signing.  Splitting her time between Cape Cod, New Hampshire, and Florida, a tablet becomes Janis Robinson Daly’s library and desk, packed for reading and writing, wherever she might land. Inspired by the discovery that an ancestor founded the Woman’s Medical College of PA in 1850, Janis Robinson Daly wrote her first novel, THE UNLOCKED PATH, which celebrates pioneering women doctors at the turn of the 20th Century. In addition to being named a #1 New Release for US History on Amazon, the book received an Honorable Mention for General Fiction from the 2023 New England Book Festival Awards, and was named a finalist for the 2023 Goethe Awards of Late Historical Fiction from the Chanticleer International Book Awards. Daly graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Wheaton College, which at the time was a women’s college. At Wheaton, she developed a fond appreciation of the supportive relationships established between students and a heightened awareness of female-centric issues. The Friends of the Ames Free Library is a nonprofit organization integral to promoting and supporting Library activities and programs, and purchases items not included in the Library’s budget. We hold book sales several times a year and participate in other Library-related events. The Friends Book Shop at Queset House gladly accepts donations of good quality books every Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Please note: Due to space limitations, we can only accept up to 25 gently used books per donor. Learn the basics of recording your voice using Queset House's very own Podcasting Studio. In this tutorial session, Queset House Manager Myles will walk you through getting set up to record with our equipment and the free-to-use recording software, Audacity, as well as provide some tips and tricks for best recording practices. Our Podcast Studio is equipped with two AT-2020 microphones, a Scarlett Focusrite audio interface, and an iMac computer to use for your recording. The Podcasting Studio is regularly available for booking during times Queset House is open to the public, but if you need a little assistance getting familiarized with our equipment, then this session is for you.
