Some of our members have been painting for decades, while others are new to painting, and everything in between. All media, ages, and levels of experience are welcome. APAS has over 60 member artists, representing a wide diversity of styles and approaches to landscape painting.Western Massachusetts has many beautiful spaces for an artist to discover and plein air painting is an exhilarating way to experience them. “It’s more than putting paint on a canvas,” said Susanne Personette, the group’s founding director. “All of your senses react to the colors you see, how they shift and change with the light.”Many of the paintings in the show were painted completely en plein air, started in the field, or inspired by sketches, studies, and photographs of nature. “The exhibition features a lively range of scenes in multiple media—oil, watercolor and pastel,” said Maggie Hodges, an artist and APAS Board Member. “It is a feast for the eyes.”A public reception will be held Saturday, June 7 from 3-5PM to view the paintings and meet the artists. An informal reception will be held during the Northampton Arts Walk on Friday, June 13.

While we lean toward picture book projects, writers and illustrators working on middle-grade and YA are welcome to join as well. This program shows how owls use their specialized powers of sight, hearing and flight to survive and thrive. A wealth of fact and folklore about these masters of the dark explains the natural and unnatural history of owls. A variety of live owls provides the focus of the presentation. This program is for ages 6 . All attendees must be at least six years old.Owls are probably more misunderstood than any other kind of bird. These are hunting birds, yet their sharp beaks and talons are partly hidden under feathers. Owls have more and softer feathers than other birds, and this unique plumage gives them a plump, rounded look. Add an upright posture and huge eyes set in front like ours, and you have what looks irresistibly like a small, bemused person wearing a fur coat. In reality, owls are superbly adapted nocturnal hunters. This program shows how owls use their specialized powers of sight, hearing and flight to survive and thrive. A wealth of fact and folklore about these masters of the night explains the natural and unnatural history of owls. WINGMASTERS is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these nonreleasable raptors, and to use them for educational programs. On Wednesdays, the Writing Room meets virtually. In-person meetings have resumed for Saturday sessions.On these mornings we will meet via videoconference at our regular time: 9:30-12:30, using the exact same structure as we would if we were gathered around the table in the Watson Room at Forbes. The only difference will be that we will be connecting by videoconference, rather than face-to-face.Here's all you need to join the Writing Room via Videoconference:Join us in the Virtual Writing Room on Zoom. I will come online 15 minutes before our starting time (at 9:15) to answer any questions you might have. You will have the option to have your camera off or on, so you can join however you feel most comfortable.The sessions will NOT be recorded, and you have the option to be visible or not, so your privacy will be preserved just as it would if we were meeting at the library.How the Writing Room Works: each session opens at 9:30 sharp with brief hellos, followed by the pleasure of getting work done in the company of others. At 11:45 we check in about how the work went and make announcements. At (roughly) 12, anyone who wishes to read for the group does briefly, without critique or spoken response. We're done by 12:30.Writers are welcome to come for all or part of the session. No need to register in advance.

Some of our members have been painting for decades, while others are new to painting, and everything in between. All media, ages, and levels of experience are welcome. APAS has over 60 member artists, representing a wide diversity of styles and approaches to landscape painting.Western Massachusetts has many beautiful spaces for an artist to discover and plein air painting is an exhilarating way to experience them. “It’s more than putting paint on a canvas,” said Susanne Personette, the group’s founding director. “All of your senses react to the colors you see, how they shift and change with the light.”Many of the paintings in the show were painted completely en plein air, started in the field, or inspired by sketches, studies, and photographs of nature. “The exhibition features a lively range of scenes in multiple media—oil, watercolor and pastel,” said Maggie Hodges, an artist and APAS Board Member. “It is a feast for the eyes.”A public reception will be held Saturday, June 7 from 3-5PM to view the paintings and meet the artists. White (available in print or eBook) or Grant by Ron Chernow (available in print, large print, CD audio, eAudio, eBook) In this group you will deepen your understanding of the American presidency as we trace the history of the presidency, beginning with George Washington, and watching how American democracy evolved in ways the Founders never anticipated. We'll follow how presidents, both celebrated and forgotten, grappled with slavery, economics, executive power and America's role in the world. In doing so, we'll broaden our knowledge of Coolidge and where his presidency fits in the American story. The group meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 PM EST, which you can attend in person in the Coolidge Museum or on Zoom.
