He will be discussing her latest book, New Yorkâs Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit - a book that will captivate readers and provide historical context for todayâs clashes between public interests and powerful business and political groups. Algeo tells this amazing true story in full for the first time, and although it took place more than a century ago, it will at times sound surprisingly familiar. It's guaranteed to be a fascinating conversation and we hope you can join us for it! About New Yorkâs Secret Subway: In the nineteenth century, Manhattanâs streets were so choked with pedestrians, horses, vehicles, and vendors that a trip from City Hall to Central Park could take hours. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious âBossâ of Tammany Hall. New Yorkâs Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nationâs first operational subway. New York seemed destined to become the second city in the world with a comprehensive subway system, after London. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. About Matt Matthew Algeo writes about interesting stuff. Or, as his mom liked to say, Matthew is an award-winning journalist and author.  His latest book is New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit.â He is the author of seven other books, including Harry Trumanâs Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip, which the Washington Post named one of the best books of 2009. In addition to reporting and writing, Matthew has held jobs as a convenience store clerk, a Halloween costume salesman, and a hot dog vendor in a traveling circus. His current gig is hosting Morning Edition on Kansas Public Radio. Matthew holds a degree in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. There is a basic journey in learning art. To understand visually, you must first learn to draw! Learning to draw is the initial step in all of the visual arts and will lead you further into any of the various mediums that you prefer. Some may like to stay at the drawing level because they have made extraordinary accomplishments! There are valuable lessons and rules to learn. Joseph will show you the many and take you through each and every step that you will need to progress in this graphite medium, from simple pencil drawing through expressive realism. He will present all of the various styles, forms, grounds, formatting, gesturing, tools, and any materials that you will need, to make a work of art! This class is open to adults and older teens, beginners to intermediates.  This series presents a lecture style class with hands on activities included as the sessions progress. All necessary materials will be provided. Registration is required. Please note: This is a five-part class. When you register for the first class, you will automatically be signed up for all of the classes. This program is 45 minutes long. The room or space is colorful and decorated. We start the Program by dancing a Mexican song with the rhythm of the Mariachi music. The audience loves to see my beautiful Mexican dress. By learning and singing our Hola song, the class starts. Kids love to have fun with the parachute, they learn vocabulary by playing with it. I use puppets and engaging games to teach them the days of the week, the months of the year, and many more vocabulary. They play, dance, jump, and run following directions in Spanish to mention a few. This class is very active, with different activities to engage the kids. My puppet Lola is always hungry and she invites the audience to go to âEl Mercadoâ and buy some food for her. Lola gives them a mexican bag and the audience pretend to buy food. Then, she asks the kids to give her food. This activity is great to teach them vocabulary. At the end of the program, we play with the Parachute and balls. The program is designed to be dynamic, energetic, interactive, and enjoyable. EVERY PROGRAM IS DIFFERENT, WITH NEW GAMES AND ACTIVITIES. Este programa tiene una duraciĂłn de 45 minutos. Join our Dungeons & Dragons sessions for adults every Wednesday evening. How it works: Come join us this January for a month-long Dungeons and Dragons adventure. Adults of all experience levels are welcome to join us. All material (dice, pencils, paper, character sheets, pre-made characters, etc.) will be provided. This month's adventure: Terra Noctis Pop culture vibes: X-Files, Stranger Things, Dresden Files For the month of April, the game will be set in a homemade modern fantasy setting of Terra Noctis, think Lord of the Rings but in modern day Earth. There are cell phones, traffic, and fast food. Alongside Wizards, Orcs, and magic. The adventure this month is a classic dungeon crawl, you and your fellow adventurers are trapped in a labyrinth and must work together to find a way out. More information about the setting as well as other helpful links will be provided on sign-up. Registration is required, and you only need to sign up once for the whole month. There will be five sessions and sign-ups are limited to the first six people who sign up. Please only sign up once per person, if your group includes multiple people have them sign up individually.
