Now Open at the Harbor Springs History Museum This groundbreaking traveling exhibition celebrates the rich artistic traditions of the Anishinaabe people through the intricate and powerful medium of porcupine quill art. It is the first major traveling exhibition dedicated to Anishinaabe porcupine quillwork and the first to be fully bilingual in Anishinaabemowin and English.  The exhibition features the work of contemporary Anishinaabe artists from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Manitoulin Island, Canada, while honoring the generations of ancestors who preserved and passed down the skills required to master this distinctive art form. Visitors will encounter not only stunning works of art but also videos, images documenting the harvesting of materials, a recreation of an artist?s workstation, and a small area for children?s crafts related to the art form. The exhibition, juried by Dr. Elizabeth Fergus-Jean, features approximately 45 artists whose works explore relationships between sustained creative practices, experiences with art, and wellbeing. Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, poet, and mystic wrote: "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." Research in neuroaesthetics, a field that explores the biological basis of aesthetic experience, demonstrates that sustained artistic practices and engagement with the arts can contribute to the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

This perspective shifts the focus from human agency to a broader understanding of the interconnectedness of everything, including non-human entities and objects; a perspective consistent with the practices, lifeways, and worldviews of many traditional cultures, and with commitments to environmental stewardship.

The “engaging” (The New Yorker) low-voice ensemble Cantus is widely known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming, and riveting performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The Washington Post has hailed the Cantus sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power” and refers to the “spontaneous grace” of its music-making. The Philadelphia Inquirer called the group nothing short of “exquisite.” As one of the nation’s few full-time vocal ensembles, Cantus has come to prominence with its distinctive approach to creating music. Working without a conductor, the members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process, creating programs that give voice to shared human experiences. As the Star Tribune has written, “The main hallmark of the Cantus sound has always been sheer quality and an unbroken belief in the special way that vocal music has of warming and invigorating the human spirit.”

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s Little Waves children’s music program is held throughout the school year at the Petoskey District Library and Charlevoix Public Library. Free and open to the public, the drop-in program is designed to introduce young children (ages 3 - 10) and their families.
