John Singelton Copley, easily considered the finest portrait painter in Colonial America, was born in Boston of Anglo-Irish parents. His prodigious talent appears to have come naturally and without formal training. Copley rose from the son of a tobacco settler to move into Boston's highest social circles. He painted portraits of many of the city's influential men and women, including Samuel Adams, Mercy Otis, and Paul Revere. Learn about the life and career of his talented artist. Led by art historian Mary Woodward, who is a guide at several Historic New England properties. She previously served as Public Programs Coordinator and Educator at the Concord Museum. Woodward has 40+ years of experience in museums of all shapes and sizes, from the comprehensive collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art to the one-room log cabin birthplace of President James K. Summer Reading Program Pin Design Contest: "Plant a Seed, Read!" Unlock your creativity! Our Summer Reading Program is all about growing, and we want YOU to help design our weekly pins that celebrate the fun of reading and the excitement of reaching new milestones. Plant a Seed, Read! begins with a silly but smart idea: farms grow food for our bellies, and libraries grow stories for our brains (which are always hungry, too!). When you plant a seed or crack open a book, who knows what might sprout? A carrot? A dragon? A brilliant new idea? Both food and stories help us grow, make us giggle, and connect us to our families, cultures, communities, and our planet. iREAD 2026: Plant a Seed, Read invites kids to grab a shovel (or a library card!), dig into history, science, health, and friendship, and watch curiosity bloom—because the smallest seeds and the silliest stories can grow into the biggest adventures! How to Enter: Pick up an entry form from a librarian. Submit your design on the front of the page, by March 31st, to the staff in the Children’s Room or the circulation desk. Design Guidelines: Your design should incorporate the "Plant a Seed, Read!" theme. It can feature books, reading symbols, or anything that represents growth, achievement, or adventure. Pins should be bold, colorful, and fun—something that catches the eye and encourages others to participate. Designs must be original and suitable for a pin (clear, simple, and able to be reproduced in a small size as shown on the front of the page). Winners:  8 winners will be selected to have their designs featured on the weekly pins. Author Michelle Young will discuss her new book, The Art Spy: The Extraordinary Untold Tale of WWII Resistance Hero Rose Valland. A riveting and stylish saga set in Paris during World War II, The Art Spy uncovers the true story of how an unlikely heroine infiltrated the Nazi leadership to save the world's most treasured masterpieces. The book was longlisted for the 2025 American Library of Paris Book Award. Young, an award-winning journalist and author, is a graduate of Harvard College in the History of Art and Architecture and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, where she is a Professor of Architecture. We invite all who love cooking to join us for our ATL Reads: Cookbook Club gathering! ATL Reads: Cookbook Club is a library-run book club that focuses on sharing and discussing dishes prepared from selected cookbooks. Gatherings take place the second Thursday of each month in-person at the library.  Here is how the Cookbook Club works:  Register to be part of a new adventure in exploring good food!  Each registrant will prepare a recipe from that month’s selected cookbook. Learn the difference between invasive and aggressive plants and why invasive plantsare so harmful to our environment. This talk will focus on 10 common invasives in NH including identification, as well as when and how to eradicate and dispose of them. Speaker Kathie Breen is a retired software/systems engineer whose career focused on medical device design and development. She became a Master Gardener in 2019 and Natural Resource Steward in 2021. This training led to an intense interest in native plants and invasive plant control. One of her first projects, in concert with other Amherst Garden Club Master Gardeners,was to establish a children's vegetable garden at the Boys and Girls Club in Milford in 2019.  Through ongoing lessons, kids have experienced planting, tending, harvesting and eating the produce. A pollinator and a native plant garden, certified by the Natural Wildlife Federation, were added in 2021. In 2022, a new program was started to enhance the nature trail behind the club with the kids. This included developing signage, adding erosion control along the river bank, removing invasives, and adding several native plant gardens along the trail. Additionally, Kathie enjoys coordinating, developing and/or presenting gardening programs to Club members and to the General public. Co-sponsored by the Amherst Garden Club Virtual Program. Welcome to our yearlong series in which “America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler”, Heather Rogers, shares facts, factoids, and fun illustrations about the presidents of these United States. We'll start off at the beginning with George Washington! His lack of biological children made him an attractive starter president — no chance of unleashing a monarchy accidentally! Hooray! He was the grandson of an indentured servant; illegally inoculated his troops; a prominent doctor proposed a three-part plan to bring him back to life. Don't you want to know more? In 2026, journey through Heather's sketchbooks as she shares some of her favorite tidbits, doodles, observations, and resurrection stories about the first 12 presidents. This series is a collaboration between Ashland Public Library and many other MA/NH libraries.  You can sign up for one session or for all! About Heather Heather Rogers isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed “America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler” by one of her favorite biographers and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and content creator. To keep her interest during her accidental spite project, Heather Rogers filled hundreds of sketchbook pages doodling her way through presidential biographies. Doing so heightened her curiosity and turned her into an insufferable presidential nerd. Along the way, she discovered unexpected threads connecting seemingly unconnected people, times, and events. She can’t get enough of the weird trivia, coincidences, and quirks. Like the fact that English wasn’t the first language of the first president born in the U.S. Or that a three-part plan was proposed to bring George Washington back to life.
