NY Times Bestselling Author Michael Tougias will be giving a slide presentation on his book Extreme Survival: Lessons From Those Who Have Triumphed Against All Odds.  Tougias uses slides from some of the survival events to give the audience an edge-of-your-seat experience that also provides useful techniques that we can all use when faced with adversity or aspire to achieve a difficult goal. The author has interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds, and researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. He supplements their stories with a handful of first person accounts from some of the toughest survivors in history. In this book, Extreme Survival, Tougias shares what he has learned about decision making under pressure and the mindsets and techniques survivors used to channel their energy into proactive decisions that saved their lives. He demonstrates that the same techniques can help anyone be more resilient when feeling overwhelmed or facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge in their personal or professional life. Maryann Cocca-Leffler is an award-winning author and illustrator of over 70 books for children. Her newest book is “Marabella’s Moment” about a girl who inspires others to live in the moment and notice the world around them. Maryann’s passion and advocacy for disability rights began when her daughter, Janine Leffler, was born, and has inspired many books including; We Want to Go to School! The Fight for Disability Rights, co-authored with Janine, and Fighting for Yes! The Story of Disability Rights Activist Judith Heumann, the 2023 Maine Literary Award winner and the 2023 NTCE (National Council for English Teachers) Honor Award for outstanding nonfiction. Both books were awarded Gold Selections by the Junior Library Guild. In addition to writing and illustrating children’s books, Maryann speaks on the topic of the History of Disability Rights, many times partnered with Janine if her schedule allows. Maryann grew up in the Boston area and has a BFA in illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She and her family lived in Amherst, NH for 21 years. She now lives and works in Portland, Maine. Janine Leffler is a person with disabilities who co-authored "We Want to Go to School! The Fight for Disability Rights" with her mother, Maryann Cocca-Leffler. She works for Vertical Harvest Farms, a company whose award-winning employment model focuses on the individual’s abilities with an inclusive approach. A 2004 Graduate of SHS, Janine is a passionate reader and reviewer of books. In her spare time Janine loves Broadway plays, writing, and life! She lives in Portland, Maine.
