UVYP Monthly Game Night @ The Fourth Place The Upper Valley Young Professionals and The Fourth Place will host a free monthly board game night for young professionals and near peers! Join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 pm for board games like Catan, Ticket to Ride, Root, Dixit, and many, many more. The Fourth Place is open until 10pm, so you can stay as long as your game takes. The Fourth Place provides free access to several tables, and dozens of games that rotate each week, plus for this event one premium table will be available for UVYP members and their guests and fellow players! As with all UVYP events, you are welcome to attend whether or not you’ve ever been to one of our events before. Karin von Hippel is a scholar, analyst and diplomat, as well as author of Democracy by Force: US Military Intervention in the Post-Cold War World. From her work in Kosovo, Somalia, London, and Washington, she will discuss today’s modern conflicts and the means to address them in an ever-changing world. Much like the change at the end of the Cold War, we face today fundamental shifts in geopolitics, alliances and the rules-based order. Von Hippel will talk about the lessons of the past few decades to consider how to address challenges we see now. Discussion will be moderated by Victoria K. Holt, Norman E. McCulloch Jr. Director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding. Dr Karin von Hippel manages a diverse portfolio that includes organisations focusing on defence, security, geopolitics, open-source intelligence, and advanced technology. She also serves as a Trustee for several charities, including the European Leadership Network, and is a Distinguished Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). From 2015-2024, she was Director-General of RUSI, the London-based defence and security think tank. Prior to that, she served for nearly six years in the US Department of State as a Senior Adviser in the Bureau of Counterterrorism, as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, and finally, as Chief of Staff to the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter-ISIL. She co-directed the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC and was a senior research fellow at the Centre for Defence Studies, King’s College London. She has worked for the United Nations and the European Union in Somalia and Kosovo, and has direct experience in over two dozen conflict zones. Dr von Hippel has numerous publications to her name, including Democracy by Force: US Military Intervention in the Post-Cold War World (2000), which was short-listed for the RUSI Westminster Medal in Military History. She holds a PhD from the London School of Economics, an MSt from Oxford University, and a BA from Yale University. The Soul of the Game: Is Baseball Losing Its Romance? With the advent of analytics in baseball, many fans feel that the “romance,” the personal stories about the players, has been abandoned during game broadcasts in favor of statistics. Jim Beattie, a retired professional baseball player who spent almost 40 years in the industry, will share his experiences and insights into the world of baseball. He will discuss several metrics used by broadcasters during games and share his perspective on which statistics fans follow and enjoy. No longer are fans introduced to and get to know the players more intimately through game broadcasts; now, this happens only in small ways through social media, curated by the players themselves.  Jim will also present tips on watching pitches, as time allows, to help fans watch games more closely, either in person or on TV. Jim Beattie has extensive knowledge of baseball, from playing in college at Dartmouth to working in the industry until 2018 before retiring in Hanover, NH. Jim started out playing baseball and basketball at Dartmouth College before being drafted to the New York Yankees Minor League (1975-1977) and then the MLB (1978-1979). He then left the East Coast and spent time as a pitcher for the Seattle Mariners (1980-1986). Jim has not only been part of professional baseball as a player, but has also held many other roles, including Minor League Director for the Seattle Mariners, VP/General Manager for the Montreal Expos, Special Assistant for the Montreal Expos, Executive VP/General Manager for the Baltimore Orioles, Wealth Management for Alliance Bernstein, and Major League Scout for the Toronto Bluejays. This lecture is part of Osher at Dartmouth's "Hot Plates, Hot Topic" series. Our Hot Plates series offers attendees a chance to enjoy a delicious lunch and a presentation by a knowledgeable speaker. The iconic work gets new wings in a mystical and technologically transformed experience uniting dance and orchestra. Filippo Ciabatti, DSO director John Heginbotham, DDE director Famous for its rich rhythms, Russian folkloric melodies and dissonant strains, Stravinsky's 1910 work for the Ballet Russes broke boundaries. Now, two Hop Ensembles collaborate to reimagine the tale of rebirth as a pair of simulcast performances. The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra will perform the entire Firebird in Spaulding Auditorium, enriched by a live projection of choreography by the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble. Beyond the Fringe: Flappers and the Jazz Age This class examines the flapper as a bold cultural figure of the 1920s, emerging in the wake of World War I and after the enactment of the 19th Amendment. In many ways, flappers symbolized women’ s expanding freedoms, flaunting their disdain for what was considered “acceptable behavior.” Through narrative and videos, we will explore how flappers redefined fashion, gender roles, and social norms. We will also consider shifts in music and literature and reflect on both the glamour and contradictions of this transformative era. Beverly Marshall has led a wide range of courses at Osher since 2019, including movie series such as “From Cinderella to Easy Rider,” “Is that My Face in the Mirror?,” “No Shrinking Violets,” “Once is Not Enough,” and a presentation about Coco Chanel and the making of Chanel No 5 (Les Fleurs de Chanel). She was also a contributor to the “First Ladies” series and “A Festival of Summer Films.” Beverly enjoys having meaningful conversations at Osher about culture and social change. Note: This course is part of Osher's "A Little of This and That" series. Filippo Ciabatti, DSO director John Heginbotham, DDE director Famous for its rich rhythms, Russian folkloric melodies and dissonant strains, Stravinsky's 1910 work for the Ballet Russes broke boundaries. Now, two Hop Ensembles collaborate to reimagine the tale of rebirth as a pair of simulcast performances. The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra will perform the entire Firebird in Spaulding Auditorium, enriched by a live projection of choreography by the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble. It is fun to picture Henry Thoreau and Emily Dickinson both sitting at their desks in Concord and Amherst, MA, just seventy miles apart from one another, writing for themselves and, ultimately, for the ages. On the surface, they were so different. Thoreau could spend pages describing a leaf or a woodchuck, while Dickinson could, in just seven lines, tackle Art or Death or God. Yet they both had a genius for seeking the Truth and their words richly reward our attention. David Grant is a former English teacher and foundation president who currently lives in Strafford, where he serves as Town Moderator. In his retirement, he devotes his time to two outstanding Upper Valley institutions: Northern Stage and Osher. David is the author of The Social Profit Handbook (2015), which focuses on how mission-driven organizations can best measure their impact and success. He has performed around the world in a one-man show as Mark Twain. Note: This course is part of Osher's "A Little of This and That" series.
