  Join CU Naturalist Bert Hixon for a spring birding excursion at Belleplain State Park. Bring your binoculars and curiosity as the group sets out on a guided driving tour, stopping at select locations to explore the park’s diverse breeding habitats. From upland forests to wetlands and coastal plain woodlands, Belleplain provides ideal conditions for a variety of nesting species. With Bert’s expertise, participants may encounter summer tanagers, hooded warblers, Acadian flycatchers, Louisiana waterthrush, yellow billed cuckoos, and other seasonal highlights. Birders of all experience levels are welcome.   Although located just beyond the Maurice River watershed, Belleplain shares many of the ecological characteristics that make the region so significant for wildlife. Its protected landscapes contribute to the broader network of habitats that sustain migratory and resident species throughout southern New Jersey. After the tour, stick around and enjoy a picnic lunch in the park with fellow bird lovers. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Biting insect season has begun, so please take appropriate precautions. Don't forget your binoculars and your picnic lunch.

Back in 2017, dedicated crews of volunteer native gardeners turned a barren, vacant lot in downtown Millville into a thriving wildlife oasis—marking CU Maurice River's first urban greening and beautification project. Since then, this space has become a stopover for many pollinators and backyard bird species. It also serves the downtown community as a place close to home where neighbors can observe nature and deepen their appreciation for the outdoors and the natural resources that support the Wild and Scenic Maurice River Watershed's health.   In April, a group of volunteer gardeners refreshed the woodchip path by adding a new layer. On this upcoming occasion in May, they'll be cutting and removing stems and weeding garden beds. All are invited to attend; no experience is necessary. While working together to give back to our community, volunteers always find time to share tips, swap stories, and enjoy a few laughs. This is a great way to learn more about native flora species and the wildlife that depends on them.    CU Maurice River will provide gardening tools and work gloves. However, if you have a favorite gardening implement, please don't hesitate to bring it along. Wear clothes that are appropriate for gardening activities. Water will be available, but provide a reusable bottle to cut down on waste. Insect repellent is recommended.

The Downe Township Horseshoe Crab Festival is a vibrant celebration of the natural and cultural heritage of the Delaware Bayshore. The festival will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in Fortescue from 11 am to 4 pm. Visitors can explore multiple outdoor locations along Fortescue’s scenic bayshore featuring live music, educational exhibits, local artists and craftspeople, eco tours, food vendors, and engaging wildlife and environmental presentations.   The event honors the annual spawning of horseshoe crabs, a remarkable natural phenomenon that brings thousands ashore each spring. Downe Township is a certified horseshoe crab sanctuary and the festival was first established in 2014 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of that designation. Attendees can learn why protecting horseshoe crabs is essential not only for the species itself, but also for migratory shorebirds such as the red knot, which depend on crab eggs during their long journey north. This program will trace the community’s development through synagogue life, immigration, and mutual aid, while examining the shift from early crop farming to the rise of poultry farming. It will also highlight the later arrival of Holocaust survivors, whose resilience and presence added a powerful new chapter to Vineland’s Jewish story. Presented by Josh Cutler. In Person & on Zoom. About the Speaker Josh Cutler is a Ph.D. student in Holocaust Studies at Gratz College and holds a Master’s degree in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Stockton University. His upcoming book, The Seventy Shuls: Synagogue Life & Yiddishkeit from the Pine Barrens to the Boardwalk, highlights Jewish life in South Jersey, with a special focus on Vineland and the surrounding area. He brings extensive experience in Jewish communal leadership, having served as Program Director at the Katz Jewish Community Center, Camp Director of JCC Camp By the Sea, and Executive Director of the Board of Jewish Education of Atlantic & Cape May Counties. Jane will share insights from years of osprey monitoring and stewardship along the Maurice River and Delaware Bay, including the role volunteers have played in tracking nesting success and managing habitat challenges. Her presentation will highlight how dedicated community scientists contribute meaningful data that informs conservation decisions and helps safeguard the rivers’ outstanding ecological resources.

Enjoy a full day of birding, paddling, and community at CU Maurice River’s Big Day celebration. The morning begins at 7 am with a Dawn Song bird walk along Hansey Creek Road, guided by past and present World Series of Birding team members. This early spring stroll moves through a variety of habitats alive with migrating warblers and other seasonal highlights, offering excellent opportunities to observe and learn from experienced birders.   At 9:30 am., it's time to go to the water for the Hansey Creek Paddle, exploring the quiet back creeks of the Delaware Bay. Bring your kayak or canoe and lifejacket for an up-close look at shorebirds, wading birds, osprey, and perhaps even river otters along these productive marshes within the greater Maurice River watershed.   The day concludes at 4 pm with the Ah Why Knot Awards celebration, hosted at the home of CU Board President Jane Galetto. This annual gathering honors dedicated volunteers and members of the Shorebird Recovery Team with great food, live music, and camaraderie around the fire. Whether you come for one activity or the entire day, Big Day is a meaningful way to celebrate nature and the community that works to protect Down Jersey’s remarkable landscapes.
