Lincoln Historic Site is pleased to participate in Old Lincoln Days, where visitors of all ages can celebrate the legendary history of outlaw Billy the Kid. The annual event is co-presented by Lincoln Historic Site, the Friends of Historic Lincoln, the Billy the Kid Pageant committee, and members of the Lincoln community. Lincoln Historic Site is excited to host lectures and offer children's activities. Old Lincoln Days, a free community event, also includes gunfight reenactments, music, food, vendors, and the “Last Escape of Billy the Kid” pageant. Lincoln Historic Site will host two lectures a day on Friday and Saturday in the Billiard Hall of the historic Courthouse as part of the monthly Lincoln Lecture Series. On Friday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m., Lori Goodloe will present about the last escape of Billy the Kid from the Lincoln County Courthouse and at 2 p.m. John LeMay will talk about the rivalry between John Chisum and Billy the Kid. On Saturday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m., Brandon Dickson will talk about the “Most Dangerous Street in America” and at 2 p.m. Johnny Boswell will present new research revealing the true age of Billy the Kid. We'll be showing film screenings of the movie Young Guns in the Billiards Hall inside the Courthouse on Friday and Saturday at 5:15 p.m. each evening. Children’s activities will be offered outside the Convento, the Wonders on Wheels Mobile Museum will be open for exploring their new exhibition "The Arts of Democracy in New Mexico," and other community partners will have booths set up with hands-on exploration activities and educational information. Lincoln Historic Site admission is separate from the community-wide events. Admission to Lincoln Historic Site buildings and activities is $7 per adult and free to children 16 years and younger, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, Friends of Lincoln members, and MNMF members. Site admission can be purchased at the Courthouse, Anderson Freeman Visitor Center, or online using a QR code posted around the site. Visitors will receive a wristband to show when entering historic site buildings and participating in site events. Visitors who show their Billy the Kid Pageant ticket at the Lincoln Historic Site Visitor Center can purchase a $5 discounted ticket. Admission for the Billy the Kid pageant is separate and is $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-12, and free to children five and younger. Tickets are only available at the gate beginning at 10 a.m. and cash is recommended. Join us for a special Lincoln Lecture Series during Old Lincoln Days in Historic Lincoln, New Mexico on Fri., Aug. 7, 11 a.m. Lori Goodloe will talk about the last escape of Billy the Kid and explore one of the most daring jail breaks in the history of the American West. Goodloe will provide a brief background on how a boy named Henry McCarty became the infamous outlaw we know today and how his role in the Lincoln County War ultimately led to his capture, trial, and death sentence. She will then shift the story to that infamous April day in 1881 where Billy was biding his time and waiting for the perfect opportunity to make his escape. Lori will also explore the many different theories of how Billy escaped, and which version of events is the most plausible. Set in the actual courthouse where Billy escaped, this lecture will give listeners a perfect backdrop to see for themselves what Billy had to do to break free, walking in his footsteps and getting a sense of his timing, the layout of the rooms, and how quickly he worked to pull off his escape. We hope you’ll join us for this lively presentation of history where it happened! Lori Goodloe is an artist, writer, and historian who has studied Billy the Kid for more than 25 years. In 2009, she published On the Trail of Billy the Kid, a photographic journey of his life in New Mexico. She has since released an updated second edition. In 2011, she became editor of the Outlaw Gazette, the annual publication of the Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang (BTKOG) and has served as president of the organization since 2012. In addition to her book, Lori has written numerous articles, led historical tours, appeared in documentaries, and given presentations that reflect the BTKOG’s mission: to preserve, protect, and promote the true history of Billy the Kid in New Mexico. Join us for a special Lincoln Lecture Series during Old Lincoln Days in Historic Lincoln, New Mexico, on Fri., Aug. 7, 2 p.m. for a presentation by John LeMay about the rivalry between John Chisum and Billy the Kid. From the 1860s to the mid-1880s, much of the land from Seven Rivers to Fort Sumner on either side of the Pecos River belonged to John Chisum, sometimes called the Cattle King of the Southwest. Immortalized in the John Wayne Western Chisum (1970), the cattle baron is more often than not overshadowed by the legend of Billy the Kid. This talk will illustrate the vast parameters of Chisum’s domain with an emphasis on his headquarters at Bosque Grande, south of Fort Sumner, and his South Springs River Ranch south of Roswell, including photographs of these locations. Whether or not William H. Bonney ever worked for John Chisum will also be emphasized, along with an overview of the feud between the two that came about in the aftermath of the Lincoln County War. Special consideration will be given to an infamous fraudulent article, which we would today call “fake news,” about the Kid murdering three Chisum cowboys simply because they worked for Chisum in June 1881. Research has shown that one of the murdered men, Bennett Howell, actually went on to start a family and lived until 1895. That Howell’s death was a falsehood was reported in newspapers in his home state of Tennessee, but never in New Mexico papers. This has led to the theory that the article may have been a known falsehood perpetrated by John Chisum to sway public opinion against the popular young outlaw. That Ash Upson, the future ghostwriter for Pat Garrett’s Authentic Life of Billy the Kid, may have penned the 1881 article will also be explored. John LeMay is the author of over sixty non-fiction books, many of them on the history of the Southwest. Among his better-known titles are Tall Tales and Half Truths of Billy the Kid and The Man Who Invented Billy the Kid: The Authentic Life of Ash Upson. LeMay is a Past President of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico in Roswell, and also currently serves on the board for the Historical Society of New Mexico. Join us for a special Lincoln Lecture Series during Old Lincoln Days in Historic Lincoln, New Mexico, on Sat., Aug. 8, 2 p.m. for a presentation by Johnny Boswell revealing Billy the Kid’s age. Between 1878 and 1881, more than 35 people fell to their death on one single street in America, most shot dead in what is known as the Lincoln County War. With all that death and mayhem only one person was ever charged and convicted of a crime. We know him today as Billy the Kid. New research by a retired Lincoln Historic Site ranger, Scott Smith, has revealed The Kid was most probably much younger than previously thought. It was April 1, 1878, the day that the Kid and at least four others ambushed Sheriff William Brady and his four deputies. Brady was killed in the exchange of gunfire. To answer the question, “how old was Billy the Kid that day,” we must depend on the “best evidence” available using this recent research. Johnny Boswell is a resident of Lincoln, New Mexico and has had a lifelong love of studying the Old West and particularly the Lincoln County War. Boswell’s professional background is in radio broadcast and advertising. His company, Boswell Media, is still a mainstay of Mississippi Media and is operated by his daughter, Melissa. Johnny maintains an office and studio in Lincoln.
