Cheese Tasting Potsdam Food Co-op to Host Tasting of New York Cheeses in Celebration of National Cheese Month. Acquaint your taste buds with locally-made cheeses and learn more about local cheesemakers and their finely crafted artisan cheeses. May is National Cheese Month, and the Potsdam Food Co-op is celebrating the occasion by featuring a free tasting of more than a dozen delicious New York cheeses with many crafted by Northern New York cheesemakers.  Cheese enthusiasts may not know that people who love cheese are called “turophiles” which combines the Greek word for cheese, “tyros”, and the English ending “-phile”, for lover, or that it takes 10 gallons of milk to make just 1 pound of cheese, or that cheese curd is simply fresh cheddar cheese before it’s been pressed into a block to age to become an aged cheddar. Sampling Cheeses Crafted by: 1000 Islands River Rat Cheese of Clayton, NY Meier's Artisan Cheese of Fort Covington, NY Cedar Hedge Farm of Lowville, NY Lively Run Goat Dairy of Interlaken, NY A delicious variety of complementary foods will be served along with the free cheese samples. A River Ship Runs Through It: A Celebration of the Queens of the St. Lawrence - Presentation A SLCCHC May Brown Bag Presentation This presentation will feature Author Jim McRae and his book Seaway Queens: The Style & Grace of Legendary Lakers and its companion children’s activity book, Seaway Queens Junior Mariner’s Activity Book. From the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway, Seaway Queens focuses on the design and aesthetics of mid-century Lakers from the 1950s and 1960s. It specifically discusses and illustrates the beauty of these vessels while attempting to link ancient designs to shipbuilding through the ages, which culminates in the Laker form. The companion children’s book is perfect for young, aspiring mariners to learn about these magnificent ships through various activities. Both books, including signed copies of Seaway Queens, are available for purchase ahead of the presentation at the Museum Gift Shop. Stop by in person at 3 E. “Early Mining in NY” Pomeroy Historic Marker Dedication (Rossie, NY) This ceremony commemorates the unveiling of the new Rossie Pomeroy Historic Marker celebrating New York’s early mining industry. The dedication ceremony will be followed by a walking tour of the site led by John Austin and Carlene Bermann, SLCCHC Executive Director. The tour includes the remains of the grist mill (1825), iron foundry, machine shop (1840s), iron furnace (1813), and David Parish’s land office (ca. 1812). The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM at 4 Mill Rd, Hammond, NY 13646 (Lat. 44.380677717195, Long. -75.653340349558). The marker is located near the Rossie Mill Ruins on Mill Rd—a short dead-end road off of Brasie Corners-Rossie Rd / County Rd 8. Parking is available in the dirt lot or on the street nearby. You will see the ruins of one of the mill buildings behind a fence to your right as you pull in. There is also a large rock on the right side of the lot with a brass plaque that says, “In Memory of Earl Cluckey.” If you have a suggestion for a historic marker, please contact Carlene at [email protected] to discuss the criteria and proposal process. The St. Lawrence County Center for History & Culture has collaborated with the Pomeroy Foundation for a few years to install historic markers in St. Lawrence County. In 2024, they have secured funding for a historic marker for Hiram Bartlett in Russell, NY at Balsam Cemetery and in  2025, funding for a historic marker for the mining industry in Rossie, NY.
