For the month of October, RFRR is participating in The Great Give Back, a statewide community service initiative, by collecting kid and teen clothing for The Sharing Shelf, Westchester's Clothing Bank for Children. The Sharing Shelf provides local infants, children, and teens in need with a Wardrobe Pack that contains a week’s worth of seasonally & size appropriate clothing, toiletry kit, and age-appropriate essentials like new socks, underwear, diapers, and period kits. To participate, bring your seasonally appropriate new or gently used clothing in all sizes, from newborn through adult XXL, to the library during business hours. Clothes will be collected in the Children’s Room.Donations should be in clean, wearable condition ready for immediate distribution. Stained and damaged clothing will be put in their on-site recycling bins.The mission of The Great Give Back "is to provide a day of opportunities for the patrons of the Public Libraries of New York State to participate in meaningful, service-oriented experiences". Join us every Saturday at the library any time between 10am and 2pm for some exploration and sensory play with our new STEM Sparks Maker Bins!This new passive program provides a great opportunity to introduce simple STEM concepts while encouraging play and exploration. These sensory friendly boxes will be filled with open-ended activites, materials aimed to boost fine and gross motor skills, and games to enhance problem-solving and decision-making skills through experimentations with different objects.Each month we will have a brand new bin to play with! Geared towards preschoolers ages 3 and up. Boxes may contain choking hazards and are not appropriate for children younger than 3.

Our second selection offers a change of location – i.e., New York City in the 1890’s - with a completely different culture based on class – i.e., family and money. As many of you know, it tells the story of Lily Bart, a well-born but impoverished woman born into to New York City's high society in the 1890s and her gradual two-year descent from privilege to a lonely existence on the margins of society. One critic said the novel "is a unique blend of romance, realism, and naturalism, [and thus] transcends the narrow classification of a novel of manners.” The House of Mirth has never gone out of favor since its publication in 1905, when its publisher, Charles Scribner wrote to Wharton in November 1905 that the novel was showing "the most rapid sale of any book ever published by Scribner.” Even though many of us have read and admired this novel and its author, Mark will as always provide us with new insights that reward reading or rereading one of Wharton’s greatest works.In person and online.
