Join us for an in-depth discussion with sculptor and ceramic artist Syd Carpenter. In a career spanning 50 years, Carpenter started off as a clay artist before evolving to mixed media installation. Much of her work in the last two decades has focused on the relationship between the land and African American farmers and gardeners. Carpenter was a professor of Studio Art at Swarthmore College for 30 years before retiring in 2022. She is now a Professor Emerita of Studio Art and holds the Endowed Peggy Chan Professorship of Black Studies. Her work is in the collections of numerous museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art the University of Illinois Canton Ohio Museum of Art Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute and in numerous private collections. Her awards and fellowships include a Pew Fellowship in the Arts Leeway Foundation Grants, National Endowment for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships. She is currently working as an independent artist in Philadelphia, continuing to exhibit nationally and internationally. $10 and includes a reception with the artist after. More Information

For many years, local children enjoyed swinging from a rope attached to the long, slanted branch of this iconic sycamore tree that grew along the creek bank. Despite facing racial barriers of the era, they were remarkably prolific and built successful careers selling their artwork for about $20 per painting. Today, their works are highly sought after and can be worth thousands of dollars, making them an important part of Florida’s artistic and cultural history. Imagine – it’s September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead – and in a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into the identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. Imagine – it’s September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead – and in a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into the identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. The Delaware County Symphony Chamber Series opens its season on Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 PM with A Classical Delco Arts Week Chamber Concert, featuring music by some of the great composers of the classical tradition, along with a new work by local composer and musician Joseph Lorini. The program begins with Bach’s Prélude in D Major for violin, followed by Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 and Boccherini’s String Quintet, Op. 30, No. 6. The concert concludes with Hymn for America, a new work by Lorini, a local musician, composer, and arranger. Arranged for violin, cello, piano, and baritone voice, the piece celebrates America and the nation’s semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A Classical Delco Arts Week Chamber Concert is part of Delco Arts Week and will be presented on October 4 at 3:00 PM in Neumann University’s Meagher Theatre. Students can bring their own creative ideas then make those ideas come to life with the guidance of our teaching artist. This is a great class to work on portfolio development, or just expand skills and knowledge. Our teaching artist can also provide suggestions and ideas to get started, and demonstrate drawing and painting techniques. We’ll use 2D materials like paint, artist pencils, paper, pastels, markers, more! Students can attend any classes that fit in their schedule, or register for all classes in this session. Students should arrive dressed to create and can use one canvas per class, or as much paper as needed for their project.
