Over 165 plein air artists roam our charming city capturing favorite historical structures, coffee shops and the picturesque countryside. Artists from all over work with oils, watercolors, pastels and more. Paint Cedarburg is nationally recognized as the largest gathering of artists in Wisconsin. Artists leave the comforts of their studios and spend 6 days painting outside…rain or shine. The public is encouraged to interact with the artists as they paint or simply marvel at their creativity. Plein Air, a French term meaning “in the open air,” describes art works painted outside with the subject directly in view rather than in a studio. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color, and movement into their works. Artists flock to Cedarburg to capture the beauty of this historic town and rolling, farm-specked countryside. Art enthusiasts can enjoy an opportunity to spend time with the artist as they work.   Painting Schedule coming soon!

Models, Muses, & Figures: Portraits from the Cedarburg Art Museum Permanent Collection May 10th – August 3rd, 2025 Opening Reception: May 17th The Cedarburg Art Museum Permanent Collection is filled with human subject matter; portraits, group portraits, and self-portraits. This exhibition features a selection of these portraits that show the diverse and extensive methods of portraiture from amazing Wisconsin artists. In a time where the creation and sharing of portraits is simple and expected through social media and other digital platforms, this exhibition features the careful process in which portrait painting exists outside of these technologies. The old, rich practice of portrait painting began as a method of remembrance, later developing into a show of wealth and power. However, when the technique of realistic portraits was perfected artists began to look inwards on themselves and their subjects, leading to a boom in expressive portraiture that has continued throughout art history.

  Summer Sculpture Exhibition: Kendall Polster May 24th – October 6th, 2025   After graduating from the University of Georgis in 1990 with majors in zoology and microbiology, Polster worked as a research biologist for 3 years at the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin. Polster then started welding furniture and sculpture for a hobby. His brother Craig, who is a certified welder, taught him how to weld. Polster started medical school and eventually took a leave of absence in 1994 to pursue his are full time and start WELD GUY! .

Models, Muses, & Figures: Portraits from the Cedarburg Art Museum Permanent Collection May 10th – August 3rd, 2025 Opening Reception: May 17th The Cedarburg Art Museum Permanent Collection is filled with human subject matter; portraits, group portraits, and self-portraits. This exhibition features a selection of these portraits that show the diverse and extensive methods of portraiture from amazing Wisconsin artists. In a time where the creation and sharing of portraits is simple and expected through social media and other digital platforms, this exhibition features the careful process in which portrait painting exists outside of these technologies. The old, rich practice of portrait painting began as a method of remembrance, later developing into a show of wealth and power. However, when the technique of realistic portraits was perfected artists began to look inwards on themselves and their subjects, leading to a boom in expressive portraiture that has continued throughout art history.

  Summer Sculpture Exhibition: Kendall Polster May 24th – October 6th, 2025   After graduating from the University of Georgis in 1990 with majors in zoology and microbiology, Polster worked as a research biologist for 3 years at the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin. Polster then started welding furniture and sculpture for a hobby. His brother Craig, who is a certified welder, taught him how to weld. Polster started medical school and eventually took a leave of absence in 1994 to pursue his are full time and start WELD GUY! .

Heidi Parkes: Soft Magic invites us into the tactile realm of Heidi Parkes, a renowned quilter, mender, and educator who had been dedicated to the textile medium since she was a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is well-known for her delicate hand stitching and improvisational quilting techniques. This exhibition highlights Parkes's profound connection to textiles, tracing her journey from the early stages of her craft to her most recent works. "Heidi Parkes: Soft Magic" runs from March 6, 2025 through June 8, 2025.
