Have you ever wondered how an artifact gets from the bottom of Lake Michigan to a display case in a museum exhibit? Join conservator Katie Linder for a discussion about the collection of 10,000 shipwreck artifacts brought to the surface by Allen 'Butch' Klopp in the 1960s. In her presentation, she will show you the complex behind-the-scenes work to preserve these remarkable artifacts. Space is limited and advanced registration is required.   The Reality Store is a financial literacy event in which students learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making, and career planning. The Reality Store will help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations. After their trip through The Reality Store, students will have developed a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have.   Event Overview: Prior to the event students choose the future career and receive their monthly salary deposited in their checking account. Students enter The Reality Store with their check book. They first stop at “Uncle Sam” for their tax deduction. They then proceed to “The Bank/Credit Union” for their student loan deduction. Students then have to visit 13 other booths making purchases for their life. Ex: buy a car, home, groceries, utilities, etc... Volunteers: Staff one of the various booths Assist students in making wise financial choices based on their salary  No experience necessary Event goals for the students: Learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making and career planning Help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations Develop a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have. In order to keep this event focused on education, we ask that volunteers do not bring promotional items to The Reality Store. If you would like to donate promotional items for the students, contact The Chamber. Please feel free to wear your company’s logo apparel. We appreciate your commitment to our area youth and look forward to your participation and support in this most exciting event. On its maiden voyage, the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on April 14th, 1912. While the story of the tragedy is world-famous, the granular details of how the disaster unfolded reveal a complicated series of events, decisions, and mechanical failures.   Join maritime archaeologist Caitlin Zant as she returns for an immersive breakdown of the night Titanic sank. This presentation provides a deep dive into the sinking's timeline, from the first iceberg warnings to the moments before the ship disappeared beneath the waves forever.   About the speaker: Caitlin Zant is the Research & Communications Specialist at NOAA’s Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary. She has led numerous Great Lakes archaeological projects, public presentations, and outreach events, and has assisted in nominating over 25 Wisconsin shipwrecks to the National and State Registers of Historic Places. She is a leading voice in preserving underwater heritage sites.   Doors and cash bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. Take a seat on Wednesday, April 8, from 6-7 PM in the Balkansky Community Room and join Yoga Alliance licensed teacher, Kate Casey, for an evening of relaxation. Participants will be guided through 45 minutes of gentle movements while using a chair for support. Starting with soothing breathwork, participants will move through accessible variations of traditional yoga poses designed to relieve pain and stress and end with a calming, seated meditation. Adults of all ages and mobility levels are welcome to attend. Chairs will be provided on-site. Registration is required and you must be 18 years or older to participate. Join Manitowoc Public Library and Master Gardeners of Manitowoc County on Thursday, April 9, from 6-7:30 PM, for an evening focused on “Gardening for Hummingbirds,” a program that Kathy and Michael Rock have been giving to countless groups in the Upper Midwest and beyond for going on 15 years. Kathi and Michael will help you learn how to create a sanctuary for hummingbirds in your own backyard. Through the use of perennial and annual plants, wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and hummingbird feeders, you too can discover the magic and excitement of hummingbirds! Their presentation will cover identification of the Ruby-throated hummingbird, ideal habitat, migration, nesting, feeding, importance of water features, and how the elements of the best hummingbird feeders and plants can bring you up close to these special birds. In addition to presenting at the Sedona Hummingbird Festival in Arizona, The Rocks have given their presentation at the Wisconsin Public Television Garden Expo and the Chicago Garden and Flower Show.  A few other familiar venues for their program include Wildbirds Unlimited, Audubon Societies, and Master Gardener Clubs.

Get a behind-the-scenes tour of our World War II submarine and explore spaces not usually open to the general public! You can expect this tour to last roughly 2.5 hours, starting at 12:30. Please pick up your tickets at the front desk the day of your tour. We recommend showing up at least 15 minutes ahead of your tour. The cost is $45 for non-members and $40 for WMM members. From Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, May 1, free blank bookmarks will be available at Manitowoc Public Library (while supplies last!). Everyone is invited to have two blank bookmarks to decorate. Use markers, paint, colored pencils, glitter—anything you want to turn your bookmark into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. We encourage you to keep one for yourself, but also make one for someone important to you. Share your artistic talent with a friend, family member—anyone you care about. Say “Thank You!” to a coworker, teacher, or neighbor with the gift of art. If you would like your artwork featured on our Facebook page, bring your bookmark to Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 2, anytime from 9 AM-1 PM. We’ll post a picture of your design to our Facebook page. We would love to see your bookmark and learn who you’re giving it to! You could also donate your bookmark to the library. To donate, please return it to MPL by Friday, May 22. Do not include any contact information on the bookmark. All donated bookmarks will be given away for free during Summer Reading 2026.
